A Travel Bag of Memories: Italian Language

I have started the other day about the contains of my old travel bag which was in the cellar for a few years. As I have mentioned, I found my old post stamps album. That was the first I wrote about the contains of that bag.
The 2nd thing I found was my Italian course book, my Italian notebook and some exercises I made when I went to school to learn Italian language.
A year before I went for 10 days holidays in Italy, I took an Italian course in VHS (Folk High School) or "basically a German community version of college" where one can learn many language courses.
I knew, I didn't have to learn the Italian language for a short visit but I was very interested to do it as I didn't want to get hungry knowing that not many Italians speak English.
Learning that language was fun and it was easy for me to pronounce the words as some of the words are similar to Spanish and my Filipino dialects. The ending of the course was that we (students) went to an Italian restaurant and had to talk in Italian and of course we had to order in Italian, too. The owner of the restaurant was told that we had to practice and should only be served when ordering in Italian language.
Well, that was a long time ago. Since then, I have not spoken Italian unless I order food in an Italian restaurant.
BTW, learning the language before traveling to Italy had helped me a lot. The first day, I was even able to communicate with a local who was asking something. The sad thing was, my old friend was angry at me because I surprised her that I could speak to that local person in Rome. Sigh!
The course was taught from Italian to German language as you can see in the photo.
Would you learn a foreign language before traveling to that country you want to visit? Thank you for reading.

It looks a good idea to learn a new language before going to another country with another dominant language.
You have indeed come across a treasure - the language learning content !!
Now I know that Italians say 'Ciao' for Hello !

Nowadays, traveling in a foreign country is easy to communicate as we have a translator in our cellphone. Back then, I was also happy to know the basic.
When I came to Germany in the 80's, I only knew a few German words and it was very hard for me to communicate with my in laws as they didn't speak English. How I have wished we had internet at that time. Thank you @DocAndersen

I think she got angry because I didn't tell her that I was taking the Italian course. I wanted to surprise her and besides that, she had to work and so couldn't learned with me the language. At least one of us could communicate with Italians while traveling with her. Thanks @rakski.

It sounds like you are good at learning languages. I am not good. In Israel when one comes to live here they have places where you can go and learn Hebrew. It was not easy for me but then one day words just started pouring out of my mouth. Now, since the corona I have days where I can speak and days where I cannot. It is hard for me to express myself in Hebrew.

I would definitely learn some common phrases at least before traveling to another country.
