The Horse reviews a recent Woody Allen movie?

We watched A Rainy Day in New York last night, A Woody Allen movie from 2019 or so. It was a romantic comedy involving two college kids whose relationship is tested by a visit to Manhattan. To me it was like a rehash of old Woody Allen themes, and a bit boring. But there was some good dialogue, and I did wonder how things would turn out. The individual performances by a good cast (Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Timothée Chalamet, and several others) are really good. I found all of the characters likable and real, if a bit cliche. Overall, it made me go back and watch some Woody Allen classics, like Manhattan. Have you heard of this movie? Are you a Woody Allen fan?

I'm still waiting for Kitty to review the movie before I bother watching it. I've never seen a single Woody Allen movie. I rarely watch movies unless they are children's movies. *shrug*

Alas, I left Kitty at home. But she was glad to see me when I returned.

I used to be a big Woodie Allen fan decades ago until I thought that all of his films were one and the same. By that time I had found out the Spanish director Pedro Almodovar and up to now I have not found someone better.

Is there a particular movie by Pedro Almodovar that you can recommend? One of my favorite directors is Italian: Lina Wertmüller. Seven Beauties is a classic film.

@TheHorse How did he get away with that? Isn't that illegal?

He was a great film director in the '70s (and beyond). Intellectual stuff. But he sullied his reputation my marrying his step-daughter.

@kaylachan I think he was never legally her step-father. And he waited until she was of age. But it's still "odd."

I have managed to make it through some Woody Allen movies, and the only one I found worth my time was Zelig. After the rest I found myself wonder why ANYONE saw him as a “comedic genius.” But comedy is subjective, isn’t it.

@TheHorse -- so down a notch I go in your books. Hopefully the appreciation of John Prine will keep me in relatively decent standing with you.

@LadyDuck It would be interesting! A long as no dinosaurs were involved. Or a coliseum and a lion.

I only recall seeing one Woody Allen movie when I was a kid, and I can't remember what it was called or what it was about. But I remember it being funny.

Annie Hall or Manhattan would be a good place to start.

I haven't seen any Woody Allen movies in a while, but I do enjoy Annie Hall and Sleeper. Timothée Chalamet is starring in the new Dune movie.
