I was offered a job today

I had a strange experience today. We went to our local supermarket and I happened to get to the checkout line-up ahead of Vince, who was following with the trolley. I waved a lady ahead of me saying ‘I’ve lost my husband’. She replied ‘That’s not a good thing’ and I replied ‘I should have done a runner while I had the chance’ and we both laughed. Her next comment floored me. She said ‘Do you want a job?’ It turns out she has looked after an intellectually challenged man for 25 years. Under our new laws, there is a lot of money being paid out to carers at the moment. This lady is looking for a carer for nights who ‘cares’, and who is not applying just for the money. She says she has a good instinct for genuine people and she is on the lookout for the right person for her client. It was a really nice compliment but luckily I don’t need a job. I must have looked a bit younger today. So that’s my story for today. Photo of a ‘caring’ Irish ewe with her two big babies.

I was a bit gobsmacked. She must really trust her instincts. All I'd said was that I should have run away from Vince while I had the chance. Hardly a good recommendation for a carer!

@DocAndersen Yes, that's true. She thought it was funny then Vin turned up and the three of us had a nice conversation.

That was a nice thing to happen, even though you don't need a job. I like the picture of the sheep but you get a good view of that one...

I thought you are offered to take care of more sheep. That means you look trustworthy and reliable

@JudyEv oh yes, it is physically challenging for the sheep. the other one will drain you not only physically but emotionally and intellectually too

I thought maybe your got offered a job in a farm or something. What does 'done a runner' mean? I know trolley is shopping cart.

@JudyEv oh, ok. We have that problem where people forget to finish paying their groceries sometimes. I'm not familiar with whether it's a problem in restaurants too.

@MarshaMusselman It's usually a deliberate thing - often meant to be funny although of course it's not.

Usually 'done a runner' is used in connection with restaurants and means you run out of the place without paying.

Even better to find a job, I guess, when one is not seeking one. lol. I'd have at least been interested in what it was paying. Then again, if I were in retirement as you are, I am not sure I would be ready to plunge myself back into the workforce either. Especially if I don't need the money.

@JudyEv If only you needed a job . It really must be hard to find honest and sincere people who genuinely care about the person they would be caring for . . . you must've left quite an impression!

Yes, I guess so. She said she could tell almost immediately over the phone if the people were more concerned about the wage being paid than the position.

The photo was taken at a caravan park. they had a number of animals there including some really rare breeds. These Jacob sheep had more than two horns. They also had an emu there.

@arunima25 I hope so too. The increased money is available means more people are applying but they are not necessarily good people for the job.

She said she had a really good instinct for those who were only interested in how much it paid. Sometimes you can tell a lot about a person in the first few minutes. I'm sure if I'd expressed an interest, there would have been a few hoops to jump through first.
