Did you know. . .?

Steroid injections can. . . Raise your blood glucose levels, even fasting Raise your cholesterol Raise your blood pressure Give you insomnia If over used damage muscle and joint Make you hungry all of the time. Elevated blood sugar can: Make you itch all over Eventually cause neuropathy Damage your heart. Guess who has had really elevated blood glucose? I do not know about cholesterol or even blood pressure. Guess who had insomnia night before last? How about "Do you know who itched all over, night before last, when she lay down to sleep". Generally these side effects are short lived, for the most part. That is except for the problem of over used. Steroid injections can also . . . Bring down inflammation Lower or eliminate levels of pain Treat certain auto immune diseases Are easier on your heart and kidneys than taking medication orally. This is really good. This is why they are used when needed. My blood sugar is normalizing and I slept like a log last night. Mostly the muscle spasms in my feet and legs are gone, My doctor keeps a close eye on my kidney function because diabetics have those issues. I am using Voltaren gel topically and it helps. I cannot take it orally, I tried about five years ago. For me, the injection in my knee was at its worst, uncomfortable. I had no bruising, bleeding, or continued issues and no restrictions placed by my doctor. I did have glucose issues and they continue a bit. Getting better, though. The thing is, with the frequent pain relieved I have more energy. I can get more things done. I am a kinder, gentler person, so to speak.I am more motivated. The circumstances of my job: concrete base floors, wrong types of chairs, riding the bus seem to cause my leg problems this year. I am hoping this one injection carries me through the rest of the school year. I will decide further action later on.

I did know that about steroid injections. Voltaren gel is suppose to be really good. Available now without a prescription.

@Hannihar They do not like to do them too often as they eventually damage bones and muscles. I am concentrating on some exercises to strengthen the muscles around my knee.

@GardenGerty Can you get them on a regular basis since they seem to help you?

Yikes! Knowing all that, would you get another shot when this one wears off? I got a shot in my great toe that I had broken a few years before, but I don't remember any side effects from it.

I am hoping that in six weeks or so my symptoms will have subsided. If I am not at work I do not have those muscle spasms because when I walk around it is mostly outside. I will think about it before I do it again. So, you only got a shot once, right?

Sometimes, side effects can be quite debilitating but it sounds like the injection has been worthwhile for you.

I am glad you got an injection and that it has helped you. I had a friend who took steroid injections for pain in her body. The doctor finally told her she couldn't have any more as it was beginning to damage her joints. Glad you got a good nights rest.

It really was not bad, in my opinion. I do not want to do it on a regular basis, but I am thankful for having it.

I had no idea about all those side effects, but I guess you have to take the good with the bad to feel better. Ouch about your knee injection!

It hardly hurt and I was glad. It did not hurt afterward at all. The doctor was very careful.

Steroids, when used as needed, are lifesavers. Many of the asthma inhalers involve steroids. They help fight auto immune disorders as well.

This one may be enough for me to do some strengthening exercises and heal up the problem.
