What makes America tick - vanny's assessment

Three qualities 1. Bravery. I would pee in pants if I saw a tornado. 2. Good education system - I envy you Americans. You all are exposed to so much of knowledge that I feel as small as COVID virus in the world of microbes. 3. Sense of humor. You all got a large helping of it, which is not fair on the part of god, but ... well, god had to compensate for those hurricanes. Negatives? Apart from calamities? Too litigant. Lawyers make more money than farmers? (It happens in India also but... your world..it is too much).

But I find an average American is able to use computers better than I, cell phones better than I, surf better than I, is aware of many things for which I would have to do a lot of reading. I think you all are brave primarily because I would flee a country like that with so many natural calamities of that magnitude. Not to mention the risk of legal tangles. Sense of humor...you all display it unabashedly, which is something I like. Out here, people think it is immature.

@vandana7 There is a lot of over compensation, check out our movie reviews or tv shows. Its a perfect example. Everything is so political people feel the need to over rate things because people under rate things because of their political views, its actually why our education system is corrupt. Why every one knows if going to make it in this world better get a sense of humor.

America isn't the golden eutopia people think it is. Just like our healthcare, our edcuation is broken and lacking. Thanks to the no child left behind act, many children fly through school without learning the basics. So while more children have access to it, Often at little to no cost to their parents, it's fragmentet and rushed.

Compared to us Indians, your system is much better. Here, education does not make a child think or be dynamic about using the little knowledge that comes their way. Moreover, social system is such that sections of society are kept suppressed even after education. So the little knowledge withers away.

We Indians do have sense of humor. But few are brave to show it out because it is considered frivolous and immature. But yes, we do understand jokes, and have a hearty laugh when in private.

Not sure about the brave. Depends where the tornado is Have to watch on the education, some are not good Yes we have to have a sense of humor. It helps to deal with lots of things. Including the orange president we had

But Mr. Donal Sutherland said Americans don't have the sense of humor the way Canadians have! I love the clear skies. I loved the tornadoes when those were only a distant thing. Now I don't really want to witness those. Education... knowledge is acquired mostly out of the system - everywhere.

I agree that most knowledge is acquired outside of school. I know most of what I know has been through experience or basically self-taught. I learn from books, TV, etc. I certainly didn't learn much about our own history in school.

Donald Sutherland said that? How patriotic...height of patriotism. The postcard pictures are great. Practical living ..nah. I wouldn't want to live in the US. I think an average American is better equipped than an average Indian in terms of knowledge. Partly because the system or inventions periodically force them to confront the knowledge they acquired. Survival would be difficult for them otherwise. Here, we get people to attend to anything and everything. There they have to attend to their plumbing, electrical etc., as these services are expensive. So they have to use their brains to understand how to do it. They learn from parents, learn in school, correlate..and so on.

@anniepa And it is irrelevant too. I struggled with those quadratic equations integrations derivatives ..but I never used them in my entire career. I feel so much of my life was wasted fearing those. LOL. Even so, your end, the standard of knowledge is higher, because of which everybody has to elevate self by equipping with minimum. Plumbing jobs for example. Most Americans can do some of it. Fewer Indians are that smart.

As far as bravery goes I've never experienced a tornado but I'm sure I'd also pee my pants. I did recently experience a house fire and I sure felt far from brave. I should add that there's also some ignorance that goes along with what some would see as bravery; it never fails that when there's a tornado, hurricane or flood predicted and it's pretty much a certainty that it's going to happen there are always those who refuse to leave their homes. Then the TRULY brave rescue workers have no choice but to risk their own lives to attempt to rescue these hard-headed fools. Not brave, just rather stupid... Our education system is fine for those with money and those who live in good neighborhoods or areas but for far too many it's horribly lacking. That's another thing I always thought, that in India the education system was far superior to ours. I'm not going to argue one bit about senses of humor. After all, Donald Trump was in our White House for four years! What's really not fair is that he's not in prison...YET!

@vandana7 You're right about the disasters. Where I live we don't have much to worry about. I mean, there have been tornadoes near us but never right where we live. We're not in an area that gets flooded so we're lucky there as well. However, I must say I've never seen as much "crying" as I've seen by Trump supporters since the election. They still haven't accepted it and I doubt they ever will. I've no doubt Trump made you laugh over there. We in the US were never accustomed to being the laughingstock of the world. I did a lot more crying than laughing when he was in power and had access to out nukes. The guy is crazy!

I think America is unique with those calamities. In fact, when I think of Americans, I am surprised at your resilience. The forest fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes..annual battering. Yet people are so positive! We would be crying for the world to pity us. Resilience is something we could do with. Our education system is like filling up the hard disk of a computer. You stuff and stuff. When it comes to logic and application, rest of the world scores. With all his blunders ..Donald Trump did make us laugh. Come on...that qualifies as something. After all, who wants to be worried about Xi Jinping

I would not live in an area that has tornados. The education system is good in average areas but very bad in poverty areas and that is not right. All people of all ages should have good quality educations. I think most people all over the world have good sense of humor. As far as farmers making good money it actually depends on supply and demand.

Why should there be more demand for lawyers leading to steep hike in their fees? LOL. Ok... but like farmer feeds us, lawyer only makes us fight bitterly, at times with our own family. How is more payment to lawyer then be justified? Education system in India is appalling. Those who make it a grade usually come from higher class monetarily and caste wise.

@vandana7 Some volcanoes erupt every year and it's not for one day. The Etna volcano in Sicily is erupting from 2 months now, some days a little, other days it throw ashes 10 Km into the sky. Sicilians have the habit. At least you have a warning for a tornado, you have no warning for earthquakes. I have always been scared when a earthquake happened, I would hate to be killed in a collapsed building.

It is nteresting that basketball players make more than the president! I guess it's whatever business is in high demand. Farmers could raise prices, some of us already are going hungry. Wonder how food could be cheaper.

@vandana7 No. I saw that. It was the only negative you presented. And I agree with you. We are far more litigious than we should be. But of course, some of that requires a bit of tort reform that no one seems interested in doing. As for lawyers and farmers and how much they make, it all is relative to what they earn and what they CAN earn, and so that defines the difference. It's business. Why does an athlete make tens of millions of dollars? Because what he does helps to contribute to a multi-billion dollar business. Likewise why does a heart surgeon not make what an athlete does? There's only so much people can afford to pay or so much value to a heart transplant. Likewise, for a farmer, he can only grow so much produce and people can only pay so much for said produce. Should a farmer make the salary of a lawyer? Only if you are also willing to pay $100 for an ear of corn, my friend.
