Chick Update

We are still holding at five little chicks. They are doing well and have doubled in size which is common for baby chicks. The early pipper is still not done with the escape job. She is still alive as movement has been noted. Considering intervention on this one. It will be a full 4 days later this evening. Eva, your thoughts on this one? There is one more egg pipping that was the last one to start pipping and this chick has mananged to get one leg out. I expect this one to make more progress today and hopefully make it out today. I don't think any of the other eggs are going to hatch but may have a surprise, who knows? The photo is of the first five chicks hatched. They are healthy and doing well. It should be out by now. If you do help, wrap the egg in a damp paper towel and work very very slowly. A damp paper towel might help by itself as the membrane could be dry on the chick after this long. I have used the paper towel trick a few times. Just keep an eye on it and dampen as needed. It is easy to make them bleed while trying to help them. But a little at a time is often safe. Also dampen any spots of the chick you can to help with more moisture. The towel works good for that too.

@wolfgirl569 He threw a fit when he found out we had left while he was napping. Wasn't nice!! But he would have cried anyway! Still working on these two chicks. Almost done with the bigger one. The one that started pipping earlier is a mess but we have made good headway!

I had already decided that today was intervention day. We are going to kid's in a little bit. Smallest grandson says Easter Bunny is bringing his Gran Gran and Papa. He doesn't want any candy, just his Gran Gran and Papa!

@kaylachan I just wish the hatch rate would have been better. With the two still pipping/hatching, only 50%.

@rebelann Some breeds do. I have a mixture and get light brown, dark brown, white, green/oive tinted eggs.

With the two that are still pipping and trying to hatch was only a 50% hatching rate. I wish it had been better.

@Nevena83 I hope so. I know we did have several cold nights in the lower 30's and temperature fluctuations could have played a part. Yes, there are settings on the incubator and no they are not perfect.

They're looking good. Hope all of them grow up. They are a bit fragile when they're still young like that.

Marbles. That fills the bowl to keep them out of the water and getting chilled. They still try to get in there though. Kids! Haha.

@LadyDuck I didn't have regular marbles so used the decroative kind. I had those in my craft supply stash!

@kareng I understand, they are like kids, I also place marbles in the bowls where the birds drink, so they do not risk to fall inside.

Yep they do but that foot was right up there since it was in a fetal position and used the foot to also push out.
