Should student debt be cancelled?

That has been a big progressive Democrat idea for a couple of years now. I've been working for 20 years now and still owe $5000 in student loans. I honestly don't know how I feel about student loan forgiveness. I mean SURE I would have loved for it to have been erased back in the day before I paid almost $50,000. Now that I've paid it I don't understand why others should just get to have the slate cleared for them. Very complicated topic for me.

Most definitely. I'm for debt cancellation.

@allen0187 I am a Conservative who actually thinks it should be forgiven or part of it should be forgiven. Here is a question for you. If it passes for a whole forgiveness or a part forgiveness, will that include those whose student loans are in default?

@LeaPea2417 definitely. It should cover all existing student debt. I will admit that I do not know how it will be done but that is the only way I see it.

It would be nice to cancel at least 30 percent. This would be a big help to their finances

What if they cancel it but they raise more taxes in return?

I dont think it should cost as much as it does to go. But at the same time it is not fair to the ones who have paid like you all this time. And as I seen mentioned by Four Walls sometimes you are farther ahead not to go. My son makes more in a factory job then my step daughter does after going to college. My son is also farther ahead as he dont have the extra loans hanging over him. And he could have got in easy if he wanted too. His junior high principle who suspended him a couple of times tried to urge him to go. The boy has the brains.

I was very lucky when I went to university in NYC I went to Long Island University Brooklyn Center and live at home with my mom. Since she was my only support I could get special funding for my schooling and never incurred any student debt, I am sorry you have had such a struggle paying yours I think everyone who has incurred debt should have to answer for it and I know who it must feel that you have this struggle and now others might just have it erased

The thing for me is that college is a choice, not a requirement. So, it's a bill we ourselves create, and as such we should pay it. I do not think it's fair anyway to expect taxpayers to pay for someone else's life choices. To me the whole idea is dumb. I think one of the things we need to really question is why college costs so much, and why the value of the education is not in line with the kind of wages that education buys. Besides. Loan forgiveness flies in the face of one of the most valuable lessons we should learn in life. Personal responsibility.

I don’t know how I feel about it either. On one hand, like you’re saying, we all had to pay for them. On the other hand, schools are outrageously expensive and often a degree does not necessarily equate to getting a job that will pay off that debt quickly. I also feel like student loans keep people accountable. Like, when you have to PAY for your education, you will have to work for it-and will take your studies more seriously.

I’m against it. My kids went to private universities and we paid through the nose. No one helped us. My philosophy is that if you’re bright enough to get into higher education, then pay for it. If there’s a will, there’s a way. My husband disagrees, but he’s a bit more liberal than I am.

Rather than cancelling debt maybe they should look at why higher education is so expensive and are students really getting value for money. Over here it is quite a bit cheaper to get a degree than in the US but even here they're starting to have a look at some places as it is felt some institutions are overcharging for a product (degree) that isn't worth it.

I think of it in terms of the schools needing the money too. I don't think that student debt should be forgiven. Too many people have struggled to pay off what they owe. As you said, why should others get a free ride?

I say no, it should not be cancelled. They knew what they were signing, just like any other debt or car loan, or mortgage. I agree with pausing payments until September.
