Have you ever gone spelunking?

I did this one time in college, and believe me that was enough. Spelunking is the exploration of caves. I should have been suspicious when no other females signed up to do this, but basically it involved wriggling around on your stomach through rooms that were not big enough to stand up in. (The claustrophobic need not apply) I was picturing more like commercial caves with unexplored passages or something in my mind. Anyway, after an hour or two of wriggling around like an earthworm in the muck, Wonderful!...not! We came out on the side of the mountain. I literally thought I was going to have a heart attack. Not only was it the side of a mountain..it was pretty sheer with nothing to hang on to. I don't know how I ever got down. I supsect it was inch by inch..and I may have had some help as well. I urge you to think twice and ask questions if someone ever invites you to go spelunking, unless you are some big adventurer who doesn't mind getting filthy! Have you been in a small cave?

I think that I was more into the advanced course, we have only visited caves that you could walk into and stand up. But they are something to experience.

I love commercial caves they are a lot of fun, and really neat...lots of them just in this state..but I will leave cave exploration to the young among us that don't mind spending an afternoon like that.

@Juliaacv It would probably feel good in the middle of summer but no other time.

@snowy22315 We were in one on a tiny little island up north in our province, and there was a huge spring in it that people were jumping into and swimming in. Not my thing, but to each their own.

Yes, I have been in so many caves, tiny and huge, all over the world. I only got claustrophobic in one in Turkey. It was a belly crawl. I couldn’t go on and waited outside with a strange cat until hubs finished.

Yes, but I suspect the majority of them were commercial. You would not stand for primitive spelunking I am quite sure., I might explore an underwater cave with scuba gear but not crawling in some hole in the ground again.

@snowy22315 Growing up, I went into local caves with my brothers and later with friends and boyfriends. Always kept an eye on the tide.

I never would ever go into a cave not exploring. We did go as tourist when I was a child but those were huge caves.

I cannot, getting inside a cave triggers my claustrophobia, I have to get out immediately.

@LadyDuck I have taken yours of old coal mines, but they run you through in a coal cart so nothing to worry about really.

@snowy22315 I went once on a tour inside an old silver mine in Nevada, there were lights when I went out... big mistake, it was dark after a few steps in.

I've been in quite a few cave systems but only the ones with walkways and lighting I think it'd be beyond me to do actual potholing. One thing I've seen that I 100% would never do is cave diving that looks so dangerous. Over here spelunking is more usually called potholing or caving.

No, it was very strenous and dirty. I would politely decline if you get an offer to go spelunking..just my opinion..

I used to do that when I was in university. I guess I used up my adventurous quota while I was studying there. No longer interested in anything like that anymore.

I don't think it"s very safe..Heck who knows? A bear could be in some of the larger ones.

@snowy22315 I guess being young make me ignorance of such things. There could even be snakes or any dangerous and venomous creatures around.

@prinzcy Yes, young people aren't really aware of danger in the way older people are.

I don't think it was a small cave, but my grandmother, my mother, and I went to some caves many years ago. I can't remember what they were called though.

Were they commercial caves? That is something very different.
