Got a call no one wants.

My sister-in-law called me about two hours ago. My mother-in-law has bladder cancer that's spread to other parts of her body. We don't know how long she has to live, but my sister-in-law is setting up supportive care in the nursing home my mother is currently living for the remainder of her days.
I just had to tell my husband, first, because my sister-in-law didn't want to tell him while he was working or have him driving worried about it. One of the hardest conversations I've ever had to have.

The doctor mentioned it is operable, but both my husband and his sister agree it's best just to let her go. She'll be 92 in a couple of weeks, and it's time. We lost her husband, (my husband's dad) about 5 years ago. My mother in law has also been battling altimers for a very long time 10 plus years give or take. Possibly longer. It's only going to get progressivly worse. And, we just don't want to put her through anymore pain than she needs.

@YrNemo I'm not sure, with her Altimers, if she knows what day of the week it is. Doctors warned, that after she came out of sadation, she might hurt herself from all the wiring. So now we're just making her comfortable in her nursing home. Hospis comes in daily to do supportive end-of-life care.

@kaylachan OMG, 92! Mine was in her 60s when she got cancer. (You are right, don't think your MIL will want to fight with cancer at this great age.)

No, we're not. At least I didn't have to say she'd passed away suddenly. There's still time. I'll let him decide what he wants to do.

So far, she doesn't appear to be. She's sleeping more frequently, as her body prepares to shut down for the final time. Hospis has been arranged and comes everyday.

I am sorry to hear that. I remember receiving a phone call from my brother who told me that our father just passed away.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. Your mil has already been living in a nursing home then? At least in a nursing home if think supportive care can be monitored better than it is if they're at home still.

@kaylachan oh my goodness.
I am so deeply sorry. Having to receive a call like that is not pleasant nor is it passing on the message to others. I'm so sorry. *really big hugs*

Oh, that's really bad news. I believe that the conversation was also very difficult.
