Taho, anyone?

Taho is a Philippine breakfast street food. Taho vendors set out early in the morning carrying on their shoulders a yoke with two silver tubs attached to both ends. One tub has the soya concoction all white and fleshy. The other tub has the sweet syrup and the 'sago' or pearl coolers that make the whole taho bubbly and chewy to eat. Taho vendors usually position themselves near jeepney or bus stops where passengers could avail of a hot cup of taho before they embark on the journey to work. Or, the taho vendors would stand by the end of a jogger's track where health enthusiasts consider taho the protein in their daily sustenance. Don't look now. Taho has been upgraded to home breakfast. My daughter ordered a food container filled with taho. For my delight! I just had 3 mugs of taho this morning.

@LadyDuck That is also the daily breakfast in both our affluent homes and deprived dwellings. We call if 'pan de sal' or bread of salt. Not stale at all because the panaderias or local bakeshops bake 'pan de sal' every day. Our people are used to dipping the pan de sal in 'kapeng barako' or strong black coffee. Sometimes, some are lucky enough to have some evaporated milk and sugar. That's all for a morning's work. Pan de sal has evolved into classier styles with cheese or corned beef or tuna fillings but remains every Pinoy's breakfast preference. I like your story about the workforce who built your nation.

Taho is very nutritious and filling. The Filipino workforce who are up and about early each morning are energized with just a cup of taho. My elder daughter used to have this taho for breakfast every day when she worked in Makati, our commercial district.

@eileenleyva Every country has different kind of breakfast. In the old times workers in Italy had a large bowl of hot milk with coffee and stale bread that they dipped in the milk. That was the only two things available in every poor home.

Yes you're right! These "Taho" vendors stay near joggers track. They add condensed milk to make it more creamy and delicious. Did you add condensed milk to yours?

Condensed milk? Oh wow, that is new to me. Surely, this concoction is for the sweet tooth. I don't actually add syrup because of my sugary condition. It's just the taho and the sago for this ultra sweet lady.

@gamayngbaki That's all right. The condensed milk has not been in our grocery list for a quarter of a century now. No danger of being tempted to use that super saccharine milk.

My daughter ordered from Giant Taho, I think. Could be hot or chilled. We ordered the hot and chilled the rest later.

I have not tried this street food when I was in Pinas because I was scared to have an allergic reaction.

You are allergic to soya? Sigh. That means you don't eat tofu also.

@thelme55 Oh, I see. It's basically the street food that is exposed to dust that you are wary of. Might trigger the allergy. That's a good precaution. We are also meticulous when it comes to street food. We only buy taho at the UP Oval where the air is clean and students walk and rest under the majestic acacia trees. Street food is part and parcel of UP Life. Even the rich kids partake of the taho and other food. UP require the vendors inside the campus for a medical check-up to avoid diseases such as hepatitis and tuberculosis. The students buy only from vendors wearing green long-sleeved shirts. That was before the campus closed because of the pandemia.

@eileenleyva No, I am not allergic to soya but to dust, mites and molds. Streetfoood are usually sold in the street and dust from everywhere comes to that food. So, I am careful.

Whoo 3 mugs! The small cup which is sold at ten pesos is not enough for me so I buy two for my consumpmtion. It's the food children are waiting in the morning ever since.

Whoever invented 'taho' had the stroke of genius. Not only is it affordable and good to taste, 'taho' is healthy and thereby beneficial to the health. I normally consume just a small cup from 'Dante. the taho vendor' at the UP Oval. No syrup but lots of sago. Dante knows my preference. This morning, I was so hungry after tending the yard that when the taho arrived, I was like a child gulping... See the picture? That was an afterthought shot. Good thing I still had the sense to take a photo. You are correct. Taho is the children's food. That is why even if our children are skinny, they are not exactly lacking in nourishment.

@eileenleyva I agree. I does not only provide nourishment to the children in the community but a livelihood to vendors as well.

@ZedSmart That is true. Had a neighbor who was condescending enough telling me I should avoid the taho because it's dirty. I said the taho will not solidify the way it looks if it's dirty. Someone who makes taho told me that.

With syrup, taho is sweet. As for me, I prefer it bland though that doesn't mean the taho is insipid. It's really good.

It is very, very good especially for breakfast. My nephews from California love the taho. I thought they wouldn't, when I thought I was introducing them to Philippine street food. I bought two cups for each lad. Then the elder one told me that his father (my brother) usually orders a huge bowl them. Oooops.

My daughter ordered from Giant Taho. It's PhP 375 per order, I believe. Then this morning, on our way to the hospital, my younger daughter spotted a taho vendor selling cups at the city plaza. He was wearing a mask and my daughter commented that that mask should have been mandatory to all taho vendors a long time ago. I agreed. And she remarked, 'I would have bought the twenty peso cup instead of the 375.' I gave her the smirk. Sigh.
