How much is your Pain Tolerance?

Pain Tolerance

I am one who has a low pain tolerance but soon enough though I get used to the reality. The initial reaction is one of shock and despair but I marshal my resources to counter the effects of the pain. The pain can be physical and also mental. I need to have different strategies for each. For the former, I need outside help, mostly medical. For mental pain, I rely on internal strength. I do not involve others as I feel they may not fully be aware of my reality. My internal strength relies on my mental makeup and reasoning of my predicament. I assess my position vis-à-vis others and come to a conclusion I have so many blessings to be thankful for. And also the pain will soon be water under the bridge and forgotten. Patience has helped me mostly. Though physical and mental pains are real, how we face them matters. Some end of the world scenarios has played out but they have become memories recalled only to pat myself I am made of sterner stuff. How do you face the setbacks and reverses in life? I do what needs to be done at the time. My motto is, “This too shall pass.”

That approach soothes our pain. It is then water under the bridge soon enough.

One day at a time, one ache at a time. Hoping I can numb myself on some days.

I face them head on, only for others to try to stop me. I push them out of my way

Good to know you have a positive attitude to face them head-on.

I used to say I have no tolerance for pain whatsoever. But as I get older, and now suffer chronic back issues, I think there is a point where certain pain just becomes the norm and you get used to it, and when that happens to tend to notice other pains less. I still don't like pain though. lol

I like to surmise a bigger problem solves smaller lingering issues! It is in the nature of life that pain and pleasure alternate; in fact, there cannot be pleasure without pain. My father used to say, when we miss our breakfast, we enjoy our lunch more.

@Shiva49 I have never heard that last adage, but I like it. I am going to use that the next time someone chides me for not eating breakfast. lol

Over time we all have found ways to handle them. We have challenges ahead to face and so we have to move on.

I accept more as part of life with the passage of time. Retirement has changed my outlook too. The initial phase of denial is always there.

Yes, we are left with no choice too. Like during this virus pandemic, we all deal with it at individual levels too.

I have a strong tolerance for meds, but a low tolerance for pain if that makes any sense. I try to remind myself that "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength."

I think you do get used to pain. It can be severe when it first strikes but then you seem to get inured to it - at least a little.

Both as I have mentioned. It requires a different approach to them. For physical, I need medical intervention. For mental, it is mostly my own inner strength.

I just withdrawer, and try to numb the pain away, hoping that the event will pass over, and resolve itself. Most animals do this too, they will go away to lick their own wounds. With physical pain, it depends on the pain, and in which part of the body it is in. Some pains just have to be taken care, of like the pain of a toothache, other pains mostly reside, given enough time, for the body to repair itself

@Shiva49 Yes, it is in and out as quickly as possible, and the foreign doctors here, do not even understand my English. We still have to wait a long time in the waiting room though, that never seems to change.

I like to understand whether I can do anything to counter the pain - both mental and physical. I try to get advice but make my own decisions. If it stays, then I adjust to the new normal and live with it.

@innertalks I avoid tests unless something cries for help. Now, this lofty ideal is forgotten: "The Hippocratic Oath is one of the oldest binding documents in history. Written in antiquity, its principles are held sacred by doctors to this day: treat the sick to the best of one's ability, preserve patient privacy, teach the secrets of medicine to the next generation, and so on." I have been asked whether I am under insurance when going to hospitals. They differentiate the way they plan their treatments then. Love and compassion take a back seat in the face of the onslaught of material pursuits.
