Just My Luck!

Remember the baby chicks that I hatched out last month? Well, they are not babies anymore. I have moved them outdoors to the grow-out cage. As for the title, it is looking like four of the six chicks are going to be roosters! Yes, that is how my luck goes! I will try to re-home them. I may keep one of them if it gets along with one of the other two Roosters. I will do this just because both of these rooster are from my original clutch and they are getting up there in age. But if that doesn't work, we will be having some chicken dinners in a few weeks. Does anyone else have this kind of rotten luck? This is the second clutch I've raised that turned out to be more than half roosters! Photo Credit: © 2021 Karen Gros, All rights reserved

No, no, no. That is backwards. We want hens to lay eggs.

@DocAndersen I know. My last lottery ticket also went along with my bad luck. . LOL. I love the brown eggs too! I only have one white egg layer. It's funny to see that one white egg among the brown and greenish/blueish eggs.

I am sorry, I suppose you hoped to have hens for the eggs. The chicks are grown up boys now.

@LadyDuck Got to look at the positive among the negative or else we are all doomed (worldly events)!

They grew that much in a month??? I just showed my kids as they wanted chicks (we used to see them at the local pet/feed shop) . . . they do not stay little fluffy chicks forever . Oh gosh, well I hope you can rehome them . . . I can't imagine "eating" chicks I saw grow up .

Yep, they grow very quickly as they eat all day long! I don't even think they are a whole month old yet!

Yep, I am afraid that chicken will be on the menu here often. I am going to get ready for another run in the incubator here soon.

I'm sorry you ended up with so many roosters. Chicken dinners sound good...I guess. I'd have a problem eating chickens that I named. I'm still waiting for us to have some good luck; so I understand perfectly. Have a good week.

I haven't even thought about naming these guys yet. LOL. I want to keep one that is for sure because that old one attacked me again the other day and I've had it with him. Maybe we should start a bad luck club?

@kareng The one that attacked you sounds like chicken dinner! Nah, I think our luck is going to change!

LOL. Chicken dinners. You are just raising them to slaughter them afterward. Sorry, I don't raise roosters. I just enjoy them at dinner.

No I raise hens for eggs. So the roosters will be eaten. Got to make use of them.

Well at this age you can see the combs coming in of the roosters very well.

I've heard that's normal. Always too many roosters. I hope you got at least some hens out of them.

I often do too. And if I buy straight run chicks wanting a rooster I am often lucky to get one. I only have 2 in those I bought this time and that was why I bought marans this year. The babies I hatched are still hard to tell with being silkie crosses. I am hoping for mostly hens in those, soooooooo

Well these guys are going to end up on the dinner table in a few months more than likely. I mentioned running another batch of eggs through the incubator and hubby said and then we can't take a trip. So I guess he has plans to go somewhere. Yay!
