Is that racism?

Hello again. So, in the last post I said I had lots to talk about so here I am again to talk about somethings. We are getting some warm weather the last few days and today is supposed to be the warmest of them. Thursday, we had some temperatures in the mid 70’s (about 24C) but it was cloudy with a slight rain, then on Friday we had 81F (27C) and sunny. Today we are supposed to get up to 85F (30C) and it is sunny out. Not super high temperatures but it is over our normal for this time of year. I have already turned on the air conditioner to keep it from getting too hot in the house. So far, I have done a big cleaning in the kitchen and dusted in the living room. I am about to clean the bathroom and then I will sweep and mop the kitchen and bathroom. Just getting a little done at a time with breaks in between. I am already getting bored of the cleaning, but I want to get it all done today. I really don’t want to do any tomorrow. So, I hear that the Mayor of Chicago is saying that she is fighting for equality and diversity because it is the right thing to do. Wow, very nice, I agree….wait she said that she is only going to be doing interviews with journalist of color she will not do interviews with whites and she says the city hall press corps is “overwhelmingly white”. She also said this.. "As a person of color, I have throughout my adult life done everything that I can to fight for diversity and inclusion in every institution that I have been a part of and being mayor makes me uniquely situated to shine a spotlight on this most important issue." I wonder where is the diversity and inclusion when she will only interview with those of color? Am I missing something? If you do not know Lori Lightfoot, she is the mayor of Chicago and in my opinion a racist herself. Take a look back at some of the things she has said and done over the last two years as mayor, and you might come to the same thoughts. Funny thing, Gregory Pratt a Latino reporter for the Chicago Tribune was granted an interview and when he asked the mayors office if she was going to lift the conditions on the other reporters, he was told no they were not. He and the Chicago Tribune canceled the interviews. Good for them.

She is absolutely being a racist. And should be impeached from her office immediately. I read about how this might be possible and found out something interesting. There is no political mechanism for removing a Chicago mayor from office. The City Council can’t impeach, and the voters can’t recall. In this town, only a felony conviction can force a mayor from office. Absurd.

@CarolDM Yes, it does, I wonder sometimes if that is played up by Media and politics and not as bad as they lead on.

I don't know a lot about Lori Lightfoot, but I know I've had mixed feelings about her. I think giving people of color more opportunities to interview her is a good thing, but completely disregarding white reporters isn't good either. I don't consider it racism, but I do think that she's not doing herself any favors. Instead of her actions saying "Hey, I'm helping the minorities by giving them more opportunities to excel in their journalistic career" they are saying, "Hey instead of educating the masses on the things minorities face and how it's impacting their lives, I'm going to completely shut an entire group of people out." My words feel convoluted so I hope I made myself clear.

I get what you are saying everyone should have a fair chance based on their ability not on their skin no matter what color it might be. So instead of trying to fix a problem she believes there is she is just going to switch the problem to the other side of the coin....makes no sense to me.

@Bensen32 It makes no sense to me either. Nothing will change as long as people like her do things like this.

My definition of racism, deliberately being against a group of people for whatever reason because of their skin color. So if mayor Lightfoot is leaving a group of reporters out because of the color of their skin, then she most definitely is a racist. I have known for a long time those that yell racist the loudest and most are normally the most racist people you will ever see. Good for the tribune for cancelling the interviews. I hope she gets none.

I agree that is often the case at least in my experience. Yeah, hopefully a lot more will follow the lead by the tribune.

I think he's racist if he doesn't give everyone equal rights by considering skin color. maybe we should start to change this system for the better, so that everyone has the same rights this is a tough task for us. but I believe with all my heart that if we can make it happen and don't forget to take care of your words so you don't hurt other people's feelings

Well, I thought we were doing better but then things went the other way and it is just getting out of control. the media and politicians are not helping at all they are just feeding into it.

It's funny.she says she was discriminated because of her skin colour but isn't she doing the same (discriminating white people by not accepting their interviews). Will her behavior end this racism? I don't mean to offend a particular person but reacting in this way won't solve the problems instead, will add fuel to the fire. We need leaders who take appropriate actions and the society will progress.

I could not agree more with you. All she is doing is dividing people more with this kind of behavior. Showing people how to accept all people is the way to get people to follow you to a better tomorrow.
