The Pomodoro Technique

United States

Three more and then I'll be done. Which meant it took three days? Yeah, I'd say three days. Not bad, really. (I'll explain that later) I've finally put a name to something I halfway do. I say halfway, because I'm not always successful. The pomdoro technique is a productivity technique that breaks up monotonous days. When you feel your productivity waning, try this : Set a timer for 20 minutes and eliminate all distractions. Start on your task (cleaning, paying bills, whatever it may be) and when the 20 minute timer goes off, take a five minute break. Drink some water and stretch, maybe go to the bathroom but resist the urge to grab your phone or get online. Set a timer for 20 more minutes and repeat. Do this three time in total. If you still have work to do, then continue on, extending the break time by 5 minutes. So yeah, that's what I've read about and what I am trying to do for myself. My issue is that I tend to do this for REWARDS instead of for the productive things I need to do! That is, the twenty minutes is spent doing things that I like to do, AND NOT on what I need to do! I still get some work done, but I need to work on it! How's your Thursday?

@ScribbledAdNauseum Pomodoro is the Italian word for "tomato". The name to this system comes from the timer that is shaped like a tomato.

Isn't pomodoro the Italian word for tomato? :-) When things get overwhelming, I write up a list and just do one thing at a time. It always feels good to mark something off the list...but whatever works for you is good. Thursday I had an eye doctor's appointment; and then we went out to eat. I will post an update soon.

Maybe I should go do that now. I am not getting anything done today, and believe me, I have a lot that NEEDS to be done.

It is worth a try. It's helped me today, though I've still procrastinated some.

Not at all, but I've been successful in the past with this, so I can be again. My problem is that I get frustrated / anxious / stressed (aka my mind wanders) and then I start going into "repair" mode where I do other things to get my mind off of it.

That sounds like a good way to accomplish stuff whether it be chores, work or something fun

I'm going to attempt to stick with it. I think it'll make my "work" part of the day very productive. I'm scatter brained at the moment with my schedule.

Sounds like a good and healthy thing to do.

I think so too. Someone once told me they do similar to this when it's time to clean. I'm doing it for my writing and crocheting.

@CarolDM Oh, I believe I told you before (but may be mistaken) I thrive on my own little world. Have been in my own headspace since I was a little girl. It's cured me from boredom and from stressful situations. The power could be out, a storm raging outdoors and I'll be sitting contentedly just making up stories in my head.
