Are we meant to eat them?

Dandelions , fields of them are so prolific along roads and in people's yards. People cut them down all the time when they cut their grass. But , why are they so fast growing and prolific? Did God mean for mankind to eat them? Have you eaten them? I tried it once. There are recipes online for them. One I thought was interesting is for deep fried dandelions.

I eat the leaves/stems . . . but I buy them from the grocery store. They were grown on a farm . . . whereas I can't trust the ones in the fields/lawns here as so many use strong pesticides on them. I would love to find the flowers in the stores to try them!

@LeaPea2417 Let me know if you find it - I've never seen them here - not even in a health food store.

I could get the flowers from gardens where no pesticides are used. You can also find them in the woods - no pesticides there, either. But maybe you have no woods nearby.

I love having them in my yard. I haven't really eaten them but have thought about it! I just enjoy watching the natural wildlife enjoy what is out there!

@Daelii After dandelions get full grown, they are too bitter to eat. When the first appear in the spring, they are delicious!

@kobesbuddy Good to know! I've seen quite a few recipes I am interested in trying but didn't know their taste can depend on their time in growth season!

You know, I don't know. I guess you could eat almost anything that grows.

I've eaten the stems, they're quite bitter. But I know some people who make stuff of the whole flower. It's better to leave them when cutting the grass, 'cause they're good food for insects

There is no picture. :-( I've eaten the young and small leaves of dandelion in a salad.

There is some internal error when I tried to load the picture. Yes, that would be good in salad.

I have eaten them but have come to think that we shouldn't. The reasoning is that they are very bitter and hard to enjoy. However, in times of famine, I would eat them. I have eaten the flowers and they taste a bit better but most people can't stomach them. I do enjoy romaine lettuce and prefer to eat that to dandelion.

My family always fixed dandelions, every spring. The secret is, to cut them when they're young and first coming up. After they mature to full sized dandelions, they are too bitter to eat. Cattle, horses and other animals that graze love eating dandelions! My mother served them in a sweet&sour sauce with crisp, diced bacon.

That's what weeds do... Grow, grow and grow. Like the terminator they'll be back! As far as eating them people do but I could think of other more enjoyable things to eat than a dandelion

It is an interesting question actually, since of course they are edible and many people do eat them. But I have never once thought of actually trying one. lol

I eat the tender leaves and the green buds, with the flowers I make dandelion honey and dandelion jelly. I prefer nasturtiums deep fried.

When I lived at home my parents used to go out and collect dandelions all the time. They're especially good when they are young and not too bitter. I used to like the flower buds the best with some vinegar. The dark green veggies are really good for you too.
