It served us well

Several years ago I bought my first house. In due course I saved up for the deposit but of course I didn’t have much in the way of furniture, or any appliances - and not much spare cash to buy them.
Cue one of my favourite activities - bargain-hunting! I shopped around for decent second-hand items.
One of the things I bought was a fridge-freezer. The people selling it had removed it from a place they had been renting out and now wanted to renovate. They advertised it for £20 which was very reasonable but I went to look at it and when I looked thoughtful and didn’t immediately say yes they said I could have it for free! They agreed to wait until moving day for me to collect it, and my housemate kindly offered to transport it for me.
It was missing the drawers at the bottom but I rummaged in a local junk shop and managed to find a couple that fitted. The outside was a bit tatty but squeezed into a corner and decorated with a big sticker that came from some mail order place (I haven’t been able to find these as cheaply ever again!) it was great.
That was back in 2003. Six years later I brought it with me to our next house, and after another nine years it came with us to this house.
Now, after getting more and more noisy, it has finally expired. We did look into repairing it, but even if we could have worked out what was wrong (it wasn’t obvious) the spare parts were not available. My partner found one website where someone was asking for help in finding spares for this model - but that message dated back to 2006!
So the poor thing has had to go. It must have been at least 20 years old, which I guess is not bad. I confess I do feel a bit sad at its demise, since it has been with us through so much.
Do you feel attached to your appliances??

Just one. The KitchenAid mixer that was a wedding present.
I have repainted it twice and had to replace the bowl catch by welding, purchased two new bread hooks and 36 years later, she works perfectly.

No... when they start having major problems, we get rid of them.
Our last fridge lasted through two moves... four years at the first house and twenty two years at the second. When we moved into this house one of the people helping us move asked what we were doing with the old fridge and I gave it to her. *shrug* It was time for a new one, anyway.

@Fleura The only thing wrong with it was it needed new door seals. I know those can be installed, I just don't know how to do it.

@DaddyEvil I'm sure if you looked on YouTube you would find out. That's a great source of info on how to do all sorts of things!

Owning your own property is very special. Furniture and appliances will come.in time. Second hand items are great. Free is much better and that is was nice of your housemate to get it for you. Wow, that is great that it moved with you to the places you moved to. 20 years old is a long time. You have had it for a very long time so you became attached to it. There are things I cannot do without and things I really do not need that much.

@allen0187 The strange thing is that I have never been able to find another that didn't cost a fortune!

I do. Our freezer that we had most of our marriage broke during the pandemic. I miss it

@Tampa_girl7 Oh yes I miss the one my parents had! It made such a friendly humming noise. The ones we have now are so noisy we have to wear ear defenders!

At least you use it for a long time, well quietly like when my television is no longer working after my cat jump on it and it fell. It is a sad feeling because it is already a junk now and it was with me for years too.
