It served us well

Several years ago I bought my first house. In due course I saved up for the deposit but of course I didn’t have much in the way of furniture, or any appliances - and not much spare cash to buy them. Cue one of my favourite activities - bargain-hunting! I shopped around for decent second-hand items. One of the things I bought was a fridge-freezer. The people selling it had removed it from a place they had been renting out and now wanted to renovate. They advertised it for £20 which was very reasonable but I went to look at it and when I looked thoughtful and didn’t immediately say yes they said I could have it for free! They agreed to wait until moving day for me to collect it, and my housemate kindly offered to transport it for me. It was missing the drawers at the bottom but I rummaged in a local junk shop and managed to find a couple that fitted. The outside was a bit tatty but squeezed into a corner and decorated with a big sticker that came from some mail order place (I haven’t been able to find these as cheaply ever again!) it was great. That was back in 2003. Six years later I brought it with me to our next house, and after another nine years it came with us to this house. Now, after getting more and more noisy, it has finally expired. We did look into repairing it, but even if we could have worked out what was wrong (it wasn’t obvious) the spare parts were not available. My partner found one website where someone was asking for help in finding spares for this model - but that message dated back to 2006! So the poor thing has had to go. It must have been at least 20 years old, which I guess is not bad. I confess I do feel a bit sad at its demise, since it has been with us through so much. Do you feel attached to your appliances?? Just one. The KitchenAid mixer that was a wedding present. I have repainted it twice and had to replace the bowl catch by welding, purchased two new bread hooks and 36 years later, she works perfectly.

Yes, I feel attached to my appliances, I am very sorry when something breaks after years of loyal use. I still have an electric orange juicer that was the first wedding gift we received from a second cousin... 50 years ago.

@Fleura I use it pretty often, because I like fresh orange juice and I use the juice to make Sangria or to add to the cheesecake. It is a brand that I really like: Moulinex! I have other things from them that are more than 30 years old.

No... when they start having major problems, we get rid of them. Our last fridge lasted through two moves... four years at the first house and twenty two years at the second. When we moved into this house one of the people helping us move asked what we were doing with the old fridge and I gave it to her. *shrug* It was time for a new one, anyway.

@Fleura The only thing wrong with it was it needed new door seals. I know those can be installed, I just don't know how to do it.

Sorry it had to go to its final resting place. Our house came with an old refrigerator freezer, which was promptly put into the basement. It’s over 40 years old and still working fine. I’m attached to my new kitchen appliances.

@Fleura Owning your own property is very special. Furniture and appliances will come.in time. Second hand items are great. Free is much better and that is was nice of your housemate to get it for you. Wow, that is great that it moved with you to the places you moved to. 20 years old is a long time. You have had it for a very long time so you became attached to it. There are things I cannot do without and things I really do not need that much.

You would be lucky nowadays to find an appliance that would last that long. Most seemed programmed to self-destruct at a certain age.

Yes I'm dreading the day when we are forced to aquire a 'smart' appliance. Now we have a 'new-to-us' fridge-freezer which is about 4 years old so we'll see how that does.
