A house-warming gift for us

Vin’s sister and husband visited us yesterday. They were keen to see our new home. They brought a house-warming gift – a potted Pimelea physodes, better known as the Qualup bell. It is native to the south coast of Western Australia, in the Ravensthorpe area where we used to live. However, it isn’t easy to grow so I don’t have high hopes of this one lasting for too long but I’ll do my best to keep it alive. I wrote about it in 2018. You can read more about it here: The photo is from that discussion. I took a photo of my plant but this older photo gives you a better idea of how pretty it is. The flowers on mine are still mostly green rather than red.
While we were in the Ravensthorpe/Hopetoun area on the weekend we went into the Fitzgerald River National Park and were lucky enough to find a number of Qualup...

This plant is beautiful, I hope you can keep it alive. I am always nervous with plants, I tried to grow some "non native" here and most of the time I failed.

@JudyEv My mother was very good, but I already killed several plants. I have to stop trying to grow Mediterranean plants here in Switzerland, it is too cold during winter here.

@LadyDuck My mother managed to grow a banana plant and a boab, both of which should not have grown in the climate at her house. They need hotter temperatures really. The banana was in a corner and she put tin foil on the two walls to try to make it hot enough for the plant.

Some plants are very tricky to grow. My mother could grow just about anything as can my sister but I am the black sheep.

That's a nice housewarming gift. My family and friends know it better not to give plants to me. I have an amazing skill with them.

Apparently if there is an apostrophe in the title, then the link won't work. You could search for 'Qualup Bell' if you wanted to. That's how I got back to the 2018 post originally.

@JudyEv Many plants that originate from coastal areas are adapted to pretty tough conditions - rocky, dry ground, salt, winds etc. It sounds like it might do best if you plant it in a rough exposed position and neglect it!

if it arrived at my house, its life span would be 10, 12 days total. we kill plants here. not on purpose, we just do.

@JudyEv we've told caring and wonderful friends, to take the gift of plants home with them. Sorry we always say but if it stays here it will die.

Hopefully it stays alive. That reminds me I need to check on that orchid. It has been so hot I am sure it needs a drink. I will put some ice cubes on it. Going to a housewarming this weekend....am bringing a coffee grinder as my gift.

That's an interesting plant. It's nice to receive plants as gifts - but then of course you feel guilty if anything happens to them!

My sister-in-law knows this is hard to grow so she is half expecting me to lose it at some point.
