Sorry, but I’m late today. That’s due to the fact that I got jarred out of slumber this morning with a panic attack.
If you’ve never had a panic attack, you should thank God. These monsters are something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. It’s reached the point where I’m budgeting $300 a month for the 911 calls and EMS runs.
This morning, though, I won this round.
I got up, took the baby aspirin (panic attacks, among other things, can mimic the traditional symptoms of a heart attack), an antacid chew, then went back to bed and practiced my breathing exercises. With my pulsometer on my finger I watched with delight as my pulse dropped like a proverbial rock from the 110s to the 90s in about 30 seconds.
So I took it off, rolled over, and went back to sleep.
Then I woke up a little before noon.
I won one round!!!!
I don’t live in Detroit (I have been there once), but panic attacks are everywhere!

Prozac has helped my depression, but it isn’t working too well on the panic attacks. Lorazepam did work on them like nobody’s business, but that’s supposedly highly addictive (I had to toss out a lot of pills because I only took six or seven out of 30 before they expired).
May inquiring minds ask what anti-anxiety meds they have you on?

@FourWalls Buspar and Lamictal. Buspar is anti-anxiety and Lamictal is a mood stabilizer. I never have thought that I was particularly "unstable" but it works well in conjunction with the Buspar.

At least Asprin is harmless when taken in moderation, and you calmed yourself down. Which is always a good thing.

When I call 911 they tell me to rake baby aspirin while waiting for the ambulance. So I took the baby aspirin without calling 911 for a change.

I use to have a panic attack, every time I fell asleep in the passenger seat of our car. In my mind, we were veering off the road, out of control! This would happen over and over again:( It was so scary! I'm on an anti-anxiety medication, every day.

Ick. I don’t have “bad dreams” from them, I just wake up quickly with shortness of breath (asthma) and burning in the chest (GERD). It’s a “perfect storm,” and it’s giving a lot of money to Metro EMS.

@kobesbuddy — oh, that’s even worse. It’s bad enough when you wake up out of a dream thinking it’s real, but to not have the dream.

@FourWalls I did not have bad dreams. I woke up suddenly, thinking we were veering of the road!

Thanks. I get used to them, and thankfully I can sometimes beat them (like today, thank God). But then I never get used to them.

Having a panic attack is so painful. When I have them I wish someone saves me. Panic attack is a false alarm; a fight or flight situation. Most of the time I outsmart my panic attack using reasoning. I acknowledge I'm having panic attack; then I accept it. Afterwards I tell myself it's harmless it's temporary. Then I loudly talk to myself saying, "I got this no need to worry." Then the panic attack goes away later on.
I hope you feel better sometime. It isn't easy and I've been there. Just don't lose hope.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I have an imbalance in my brain chemistry; so suggesting my meds won't help you. I'm glad you were able to avoid going to the hospital.
