The case of the disappearing sandpaper

I have sandpaper. I know I do. But when it comes time to use it, I can't find it.
After a brief rain today, the sun came out so I thought I'd sand down the wooden handrails on the front steps. I bought a new packet of sandpaper just for this purpose not too long ago.
I look where I'm pretty sure I put it, but it's not there. I look in several cupboards. Still no sandpaper. I even went into the damp basement where I wouldn't normally put it, but it wasn't there, either.
@TheHorse , have you been sneaking in and "borrowing" my sandpaper?

That happens with me most of the time cannot find where i kept something and after arranging substitute for it i find it

And that's why I have a designated spot for everything. Pretty used to move stuff around but quit doing that because I'll keep asking her where it is until we find it. (When she was younger, she hated it when I'd glance around my bedroom, where she wasn't supposed to go, and tell her exactly what had been moved from where I put it. Now, I just take a photo with my phone and show her where I put it... I don't have to hear, "I didn't touch it!" anymore.)

Me too was searching for a sandpaper for a long time. Yet I found it when I was not looking for it. I was looking for something else but saw sandpaper instead. But I won't forget again where it is kept when I need it again

It's funny, when you're looking for something, you can't find it and then when you stop it magically appears in the last place you would expect.
