The Sunday Morning Exploration

With our first heat advisory warning of the summer, I had planned to do nothing more than lay around this past weekend in the cool comfort of my A/C in my house. Well, my girlfriend had other plans; she wanted to do something fun outdoors. Of course, I wanted to do something fun indoors. So, we compromised and did something fun outdoors (funny how compromises in relationships work, the woman usually gets her way! lol). Anyway, all kidding aside, we went to explore a local botanical gardens about 45 minutes away from where we live. The property the gardens are located on is an old 100 year old abandoned lime rock quarry, and most of the trails in the botanical gardens meander down into the quarry, which has been transformed into a beautiful oasis. Given that most of Florida is flat and low-lying to the ocean, it was surprising to see cliffs and bluffs and some actual topography change at the gardens. It almost seemed like we weren't in Florida at all, save for the tropical atmosphere of all the plants and trees. To beat the heat, we went there as early as possible in the morning. I'm glad we did, because an hour into our adventure we were soaked in sweat. But we still had a fun time! Did you do anything fun this weekend? Photo is my gf relaxing in one of the several wooden hammocks scattered throughout the botanical gardens. Nearby the botanical garden is a dry cave/underground spring called Devil's Den. Really neat little swimming/diving hole. I've been there before, but my gf hasn't, so that may be our next little weekend adventure.

Looks like a fun place to visit! Since I missed this one when you first posted it, I'm not sure what I did that weekend. Ha! This weekend is R&R at home though!!

@moffittjc I have put some feelers out for you and will let you know what I find out. I used to stay in Kenner out toward the airport when I had to work down that way. Another option would be Metairie. Are you flying in or driving?

@kareng We’ll be driving. I don’t mind staying in the downtown area, but I don’t know the roads/streets there. I want to stay in a hotel that has a quick and easy drive over to City Park.

I need your help for my upcoming trip to New Orleans. The wedding is going to be in City Park, but it doesn't look like there are any hotels right near there. It appears they are all downtown or by Bourbon Street. I just want to find one that is good, safe, and easy to get in and out of when my daughter and I go to her friend's wedding.

Is this a picture from the gardens? I haven't been to the gardens in a few years. Wonder if hubby would wanna go. Last few times I went it was without him. Granted, I went on a Saturday, which is his working day.

Yes, this picture was taken at the gardens. In the background you can see one of the many quarry pits on the property. They are all filled with water now to create beautiful ponds.

@lovebuglena It was surprisingly comfy to lay in. I wanted to try it with both me and my gf, but I didn't trust that it would hold both of our weight.

@moffittjc Nice hammock like thingy. Great for lounging or a short nap. Not sure how comfy it is though.

You are not lucky Jeff, in our couple compromises always mean that we do what my husband wants to do. Devil's Den spring is really beautiful I remember that we visited the place.

@moffittjc You are right, on the surface there is not a lot to see.

There’s not much to see of Devil’s Den on the surface, you can’t fully appreciate its magnitude and beauty until you descend the staircase down into the cavern.

@LadyDuck I think what makes it interesting is that you have to descend into a cave to get to the spring. Very unique for Florida!

The Botanical Gardens sounds like a great place to visit. I'm glad you went early. The cave sounds like another great adventure on your calendar in the near future. Nice picture of your gf enjoying the hammock.

The botanical gardens was definitely something different than what I’m used to seeing in Florida. The topography alone was pretty cool.

@moffittjc I don't consider myself a 'real' photographer. All I take is horse shots and I discard nearly as many as I keep!

we wander down to the national botanical gardens from time to time - probably physically closer (around 25 miles) but for us closer to 1..5 hours by car - about an hour by the metro

@moffittjc They are amazing (and free!) plus a short walk from the Metro (finding parking there, takes luck and well extreme luck!).

such compromises are the key to successful relationships sounds like fun, but i think that Devil's Den could be more interesting. i did nothing special, except went to pools after long time of not going there

Devil’s Den is very interesting if you are a certified cave diver/scuba diver, otherwise there’s not a whole lot to see once you’ve already seen the cavern.
