Was charged a fee for using my credit card

Last week I was craving for an apple turnover so went to an Italian store near me. That's where I usually buy it. It costs $2.50, which is not a bad price. Usually I always use my credit card to pay for it because I get cash back, so that's what I decided to do this time as well. After I paid, I looked at the receipt and noticed that I was charged ten cents for using my card. That has never happened before, so must be a new policy. I wonder if they had a sign for it. It's not a big deal, however, I wasn't happy about it. There is no reason to pay a credit card fee when you have cash on you. I had $3 in my wallet, so could've paid in cash and avoided this fee, had I known they do that now. Also, the cash back I got from this purchase was less than the fee, so it wasn't worth it to use the card anyway.

@lovebuglena Oh yes they have signs up in the little shops. Oh I believe you Lena, restaurants often do that and dont say about it.

@RebeccasFarm Makes me upset because we can easily withdraw money before hand if we know they're gonna charge us a fee.

Do they let you know about it beforehand? Sometimes we go to a restaurant and find out they charge a fee for using a card only after we've already given it and it was charged.

That sucks that you were charged a fee without them telling you first. There should have been a sign, or at least they should have had the courtesy to alert you when you were making the purchase.

@lovebuglena I pay for everything with my credit cards, I don't ever carry cash. If you pay off the balance every month, using a credit card is like getting an interest-free loan from the bank (since you have 28 days to pay the bill). I also use it to amass reward points and cash back, so not only am I getting an interest-free loan from my bank, they're also paying me to do it! lol

The cashier took my card and just charged it (contactless way). Didn't even warn me about the fee. And I do not remember seeing any sign about it. They did not charge a fee for using the card before. Wonder if they are doing that now because of the pandemic. Some restaurants are now charging a fee for paying with a card. And we don't always know ahead of time, so we end up having to pay the fee as we do not have cash..

@moffittjc I get 1.5% cash back on mine so I never pay with cash, unless a store doesn't accept credit cards or they do but have a minimum for using a card but I didn't take that much worth of stuff.

I prefer to charge everything, no matter how small the amount is. Faster check out. Plus easier to track all purchases. And I get 1.5% cash back.

They should inform people if there is a charge.

@lovebuglena There is one computer store that charges a fee if we pay with credit card, but they inform everyone at the moment to pay.

There should be a sign and/or the cashier should let the customer know about it. Neither of these happened. Next time I am there I will check to see if there is any sign. But at least now I know they charge a fee and will make sure I have cash on me. The good thing is my bank is in the same plaza as the store so if I have no cash on me I can just go and withdraw some.

They should have had a sign up. Maybe with small purchases they charge a fee because they pay a fee for each charge.

You think maybe they only charge a fee for small purchases?

Should have a sign for it, or you told, now we charge a fee, for credit card use. But, at least you got cash back too.

I did not see any sign. And the cashier did not inform me there is a fee for using my card. Maybe she didn't know.

They should have a sign up if they are going to charge you for using your c card.

So the fee came from using a credit card at the bakery? That's a shame, and yes they should have placed a sign.

It was not a bakery. A small Italian grocery store.

Businesses are being charged a fee for processing a credit card transaction now. (I can't remember when the fees started being charged but some of the businesses are passing that fee on to their customers.)

I know that businesses have to pay a fee every time a card is swiped. That's been the case for a long time. But stores never charged customers that fee. And I've not experienced that anywhere except when I went to get that turnover. Restaurants, on the other hand, now started charging the fee when paying with the card. Probably because of the pandemic. Not all do that but many do.

I once got tangled up in credit card debt then got out and ever since I only use debit cards, So I know how much I have and how much I can spend, I order mostly online so I don't have ready cash around,

I prefer the credit card because I get cash back. I will never buy things I can't pay for when the statement comes at the end of the month. So I don't have an issue with overspending. Hubby, on the other hand, has a lot of credit card debt. He's been paying it off but still a long way to go.
