The pub with a difference - the Ettamogah, Cunderdin, Western Australia

For those of you who like to marvel at the names of West Australian towns, on the weekend we drove through Cunderdin, Meckering, Tammin, and went close to Doodlakine. I love Doodlakine. I wonder how it got its name? Cunderdin’s main claim to fame is the Ettamogah Pub. The original Ettamogah Pub came from the imagination of cartoonist, Ken Maynard. It was built of timber and featured sloping walls and a distinctive architectural style. Businessman, Lindsay Cooper, took up the idea and built his own Ettamogah Pub just outside Albury in New South Wales. It opened in 1987. This led to a chain of pubs based on the same lines. The advertising for the Cunderdin model states that Ettamogah means ‘place of a good drink’ but I don’t know if that is authentic or not. Hopefully, you can see how the back wall slopes out.

I swear, when people were coming up with place names in Australia, the people sat down with a group of their friends and said, "Okay, we're starting a little town here... What's the weirdest thing we can make up as a name for it, just to confuse people later on?" And they sat there throwing out the silliest things they could think of until one of them said, "Ooooh! I LIKE that one! That's it's name!"

@JudyEv @DaddyEvil At least they are unique - not like the US where so often they just named one place after another place they remembered, and then people from there moved on to a new place and then took the same name. So for example there are 19 Rochesters, 14 Birminghams, 16 Parises.

Well, although it pains me greatly, I actually have to agree with you.

Those are certainly out of the world names. May be a writer could use them while writing a novel on some alien planet.

@JudyEv You aren’t referring to Slutsend, B’stardstown or Termonfeckin by any chance are you?

@JudyEv Oh we have loads, I love perusing the road map! Slaggyford, Midgeholme, Daddry Shield, Trumfleet, Little Cowarne, Ullingswick - and that's just from flicking through a couple of pages.

I guess every country has a few names that seem really strange to outsiders.

I haven't kept up with my favorite posters on myLot recently, including you. I was unaware that you'd gained some fans of WA unusual/fun town names. So add me to your list of marvelers! That's a cool pub, too!

I like the names of your locations, they are unique. We have some WEIRD city names in Italy and surely also unique Donnadolce (SweetWoman), Femminamorta (DeadFemale) Belsedere (NiceButt).

You get drunk in a place like that, and you will be questioning whether it's your drunkenness or the sloping walls that have you staggering and falling over! lol

@moffittjc It looked to be closed so we didn't go across. It was Monday lunchtime so they might have been closed, being such a small town.

That's a unique name. And for people from a different culture like me, such names would be stranger and even hard to remember.

When we were in Nepal even a person's first name could be very hard to remember as it was often a name we'd never heard of before.
