We have an airport nearby

In the promotional material that we were given before we moved to Treeby in Western Australia (WA), we were warned about the noise from nearby Jandakot Airport, a general aviation airport so not a huge international concern. The noise hasn’t bothered us but it did surprise us how busy it is. The small planes go all day most days doing loops round and round the area. With help from Wikipedia, I can tell you that it is ‘the busiest general aviation airport in Australia in terms of aircraft movements’. The airport recorded 208,778 aircraft movements in the fiscal year ending 30 June 2018. A number of essential service organisations have their bases there including the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Department of Environment and Conservation Forest and Bushfire Patrol, Fire and Emergency Services Authority of WA emergency helicopter and the WA Police Air Support. It is home to ten flying schools, including Singapore Airlines and China Southern Airlines pilot training establishments, three flying clubs and a large number of associated businesses, including Fugro, touted as the world’s largest aerial geophysical survey company. The airport covers 6.22 km2 (2.40 sq mi) and includes 2.8 km2 (1.1 sq mi) of conservation reserve. Two hundred and ninety native flora species have been identified and over 100 fauna species including kangaroos and southern brown bandicoots. Which gives me a great excuse to put up a photo of kangaroos. Let’s hope all those trainee pilots up there know what they’re doing.

@judyev So long as it’s not too noisy it’s nice to watch the planes. Belfast city airport is a few miles from us and we’re on the flight path but there isn’t too much traffic and nothing after about 9pm.

@JudyEv One of our family treats when we moved from the bush to the edge of a very small city in Malawi was to drive out to the airport to watch the weekly VC10 roar into the airport from London then off again. The airport also had an open air swimming pool right beside the runway where we languished all day waiting for the speck in the sky develop into a plane. We lay there just a few yards from thy plane as it thundered and spluttered. It was the 60s of course.

Vince drove there yesterday to take some photos of the action. There is a viewing platform. He also follows them on Flight Radar.

@xFiacre This reminds me of a tale my Dad used to tell of an old farmer who thought his wife was looking a bit peaky. So he offered to hitch up Nellie (horse to cart) and they'd drive down to the railway line and watch the train go through. You would have enjoyed languishing in the pool I'm sure.

It is a very busy airport. We live not too far from the Italian airport of Milano Malpensa, may be the largest International Italian airport. We are not annoyed by the traffic, but I can see the lights in the sky during the night.

@JudyEv Almost all the International flights to and from Italy are from Milano Malpensa. If I stay on the balcony during the night I can see the light of the big jets every 30 seconds, but at least you do not hear them.

@LadyDuck The plane lights at night look good I think. That's a busy airport - every 30 seconds!!

There isn't too much night activity here although we can see the lights of the big jets that use the main airport.

I live near our Daniel K. Inouye airport. About 15 in a car. I hear helicopters, small planes, every now and then, but not everyday. Air Force Base near, too. So I'll hear fighter planes too, something like 1 - 2x a month. For me, it makes me feel, not alone, like life is everywhere. Noise is fast going. I don't mind it at all.

It doesn't worry me. The building site over the road is worse but that won't last forever.

Hope these animals are not scared away by the noise or are not hurt or killed in any mishaps there. The trainees need to be careful all the time.

The animals would have grown up with the airport so the noise wouldn't worry them.

@arunima25 It started off as very small and has grown over the years so the animals would be well used to it by now.

that is a very busy airport. The one near us is no where near that busy. Our favorite (on the way to the other side of Maryland) actually has a runway that is 4 feet above the highway. So planes take off right over the highway as you drive by!

It doesn't really worry me as long as they don't have an emergency and have to land on the road somewhere nearby.

That is certainly a busy airport. None nearby here, but there are a couple smaller airports near us in Florida. I think the newbies avoid flying over the Atlantic from fear. lol

I don't think it is all that big just that there is a lot of activity. It's nearly all smaller planes rather than big jets.

Wow, that is a busy airport. There is a small airstrip just a couple of miles from here. I went down there one time, and it is actually more like a big field. Just some private planes use it from time to time I think. There is a bigger one in town that can accomodate small jets I think. It is more like a "real airport."

This caters for most of the lighter planes. There are dozens of flights taking fly-in-fly-out workers to the mine sites.

@snowy22315 The mines sites are all in the back of beyond. They have their own infrastructure but fly workers in and out. The shifts all vary but might be three weeks working (usually 12 hour days) then one week off or variations on that. The money is good which attracts people. Mostly it's iron ore that they're mining.

When I was growing up in Philadelphia, the Philly North East Airport was very close, it help alleviate the traffic from the Philadelphia International Airport which was probably 7-10 miles from us. There were planes constantly. Love the roo's
