Hey, Can I Borrow a Cup of Electricity?

One of the reasons I would never buy an all-electric car is because of the emergency factor. Should you run out of gasoline, you can call AAA to bring you a gallon. You can’t call them for a gallon of electricity. However….. In one of the more interesting things to happen in our neighborhood (and that’s good, because it shows you what a nice, quiet neighborhood I have), the electricity went off to the last one-third of the street tonight at about 8 PM. From my house to the other end of the block, we have electricity on both sides of the street. My next-door-neighbor, however, does NOT. So, I went over and asked if they wanted to borrow a cup of electricity. There’s an extension cord running from my garage to their back door now, keeping them minimally entertained until the power comes back on for their part of the street. It’s the very least I can do. He cuts my grass, and has for years (I never asked him, and he never asks for money for doing it). They’re the absolute best neighbors you could ever want or hope for. What’s an extension cord’s worth of electricity to say “thank you” for the 30-plus years they’ve been such good friends to me? I hope the power comes back on soon. It’s not hot here; however, there is a threat of rain in the forecast overnight, and I sure wouldn’t want the extension cord out in the rain! Guess this is the appropriate theme song….. (And yes, if you’re wondering, that IS Morgan Freeman you see in the opening credits. Rita Moreno, too!)

That was very nice of you. I'm not sure I like either of our neighbors well enough to do that.

That’s one of the good things about living in one place for a long time. You know the “good ones.” Everyone in this part of the street has been here for a long time, so we all know one another and our crazy ways.

@FourWalls I understand. We only lived in the last house 22 years. We didn't talk to the neighbors and they left us alone.

@DaddyEvil — I tend to keep to myself, but I do know a few of the neighbors (mostly fellow veterans, this is like veterans’ corner with a Marine, three sailors, and two army vets! ).

The Bible says, “Love God and love your neighbor.” It really isn’t that hard if you put yourself in your neighbor’s shoes.

I would hope it was simply the right thing to do. The Bible gives us two commandments: love God, and love your neighbor.

You have very kind neighbors. People are not usually like that these days, they have become a bit selfish. Yes, that's the drawback of electric cars.

About three hours. Very quick, considering half the manpower is in New Orleans helping them.

Thanks so much for the compliment. It’s sort of sad that people think it’s “exceptional” to simply do the right thing. I guess people these days don’t want to help others.

@FourWalls Of course. Many do not know how to do the right thing unfortunately.

I'm sure your neighbor was grateful for that cup of electricity. I also think crazy things about electric cars.

What a wonderful neighbor. That was really good of you to offer the extension cord to them.
