I got rid of these plants

Philippines
September 18, 2021 7:21am CST
More than 7 months ago, I was able to acquire this aqua plant when it was just too small. I really thought it was a dwarf water lettuce. But when I exposed it to pure sunlight for weeks and it grew more than five inches. I let it stay for a while, until its roots kept growing and suffocating my fish. So I finally got to my senses and got rid most of them. I posted this on facebook few people reacted. Some think I should have given it away for free, others think i should have used it as fertilizer. Others showed some health benefits for the humans. But i didn't care, I just hope my new batch of fish survives now that Ihave gotten rid of the big ones now.

Sometimes it helps to know more before we plant things.

You are right. That is like any plant, we should know about them before planting them as they can be dangerous if you have kids or pets around.

I've had this plant in the past but since they were indoor then, they never grow this big @GardenGerty I have done my research @ramapo17

Yes, some of them and others before @dya80dya but now I want to know if the plants were the only problem.

What kinds of plants are those? I would have put them in a compost pile to feed to my trees once they have decomposed.

Hello @rebelann it's a floating plant that the roots grow on water. And gets bigger when it's exposed to hours of sun light.

I wish I could have that plants, it looks similar to the wild plants growing in our backyard. But I transfered them to my secret garden and hopefully they don't die.

Hello @asianlady Im sure they could be available in your area, maybe there's a petshop nearby that sells fish and aquaplants.

@Letranknight2015 Possibly, I will take a look next time. Last 2019, I went to visit my best friend in Istanbul, Turkey. And her roommate had a goldfish. We babysit the goldfish for 3 days and the fish was so noisy when she is hungry and needs her water to be changed.

You should have checked them before planting them and should not have let them grow to 5 inches.

@sjvg1976 this is an aquatic plant and they float on water not planted on the soil. maybe this time I can have them multiply with out growing more than 5 inches. Not much research on youtube im afraid. doesn't say about suffocating fish.

You did well to get rid of it. But check if they are food for fish.lf I am not mistaken these leaves are given to chicks in our area as supplement.

Sadly, no chickens here or the dogs will eat them @franxav so it has to go.

They are cute water plants... I wonder if they are edible... =) Glad you had gotten rid of them because your fish might not be able to survive with lots of water lettuce...

No they are not @brokenbee their roots rot and had suffocated the fish in the long run.

Hello @martinus123 well, it's pretty until it starts harming your fish.

You don't have to throw all of them. You just have to lessen them when they become overcrowded. Their roots are good for fries as hiding places when they are young. For goldfish the roots become a place to put their eggs on. Also the roots also serves to absorb the excess nutrients like ammonia and nitrates to make the water less toxic.
