My young neighbor is definitely struggling

She is 19 years old and is living in the apartment next to me with a 19 year old friend and roommate. Her mother is dead from a drug overdose. I don't know if there is a father in the scene. Her brother is in jail awaiting trial and will likely be sentenced to 5-10 years. She was my student several years ago so she feels comfortable with me. She uses my vacuum. She brings her cans of tuna and green beans over to open with my electric can opener. That is like all she eats--canned tuna and green beans. Breaks my heart. I've been giving her my leftovers. I cook full recipes for 4 or 6 servings and it is just me here. I don't eat much these days. So I cook and then offer her the excess. She always accepts. This week so far I've given her bolognese and pasta and butter chicken with rice. She loves it all and shares it with her roommate. This morning I woke up to a text saying that she wanted me to teach her how to cook. I will be happy to do so. That is what teachers do.

That's a rough life. I'm glad she has you in her life to make it better. The two of you will enjoy cooking together.

She seems to be doing alright, because you're able to help her. It also helps you too, because you wind up with a little less waste.

I sure could have used somebody like you around when my daughter was young. I knew how to cook but gads on available funds. Somebody asked what daughter needed and I told them the truth: no on toys. Yes on formula and diapers.
