The man who led the Chieftains and helped spread traditional Irish music around the world has died. Paddy Maloney. He was 83 years young. Many times the Chieftain's rolicking music yanked me out of a down in the dumps stew. So hearty and so authentic. The group appeared to really enjoy being together, making music and telling jokes. The world is a better place because Paddy Maloney was in it. Rest easy, sweet sir.

@JimBo452020 I hope the next generation will carry on their heritage. I think there are young Dubliners now.

@sallypup I vaguely remember someone talking about them a few years ago on another site. They were from Ireland.

@CarolDM They're fantastic and they featured other artists, showcasing them and helping them to get a good foothold in the music world.

The Chieftans were always the more serious, 'musiciall' side of Irish music, though their music was every bit as lively and full of fun as the other groups of that era - the Clancys and the Dubliners, for example. Here is one of the most beautiful laments played by the Chieftans - The Fairies Lamentation and Dance: (Paddy produced this track, though, according to the credits he didn't play on it)

@sallypup Paddy Maloney was a very fine pipe player but he always saw himself as an ambassador of the uillean pipes and was more than happy to showcase other pipers and to encourage young pipers. I'm sure that he must have been the inspiration for hundreds of up and coming pipers. That will be his legacy.

@owlwings I loved how the Chieftains highlighted other musicians. I loved the Clancy Brothers and Dubliners, too. And Davey Spillane's uillane pipe playing.

@Hannihar Paddy was a legend in Irish folk music. Kind of like replacing Elvis.

I don't know who that was, but 83 is a respectable age.
