Well we ended up with another turn of events today. Hubby was planning on going to mow but didn't sleep very well last night. He got up sometimes in the wee morning hours and stayed up. I did remember him getting back in bed at daybreak and fell back to sleep myself. He ended up getting up around noon and I was crashed out like a solid rock. I didn't crawl out of bed until right before 2 pm!! That is a few hours later than I like to get up. I got all the feeding chores done and had my coffee. I decided since it was so late that I would just go ahead and have a piece of Devil's Food Chocolate cake with vanilla icing as my brunch!! Hubby cancelled his mowing for the day. He said he will go tomorrow. We had severe thunderstorms in the forecast so that may alter his plans again. I was so looking forward to a day at home by myself. Oh well! He is back in bed now so I'll make the most of it. We have got to get back on a better sleeping pattern. Do you have any tips? Can't go to bed early, that has never worked for either of us. I would say follow a bedtime ritual or routine. Let your body and mind know it is time to wind down.

My routine is to read right before the lights go out in bed.

I always believe in a routine. Try to go to bed at the same time every night. Works for me. Good luck.

That won't work here. I think forcing the issue would just make it much worse.

@CarolDM I'm just going to go with the flow. I've had numerous sleep studies and I don't go into deep sleep until after 5 am.

Reading a book may help you to fall asleep quickly

That is my normal pattern. However, sometimes reading doesn't help. Tonight was like that. I went to bed, read for about 45 min. Turned the reading light off and tossed and turned for another hour. Finally got up and hopped on myLot and turned the television on.

@Nawsheen Yes, and I may do some in the winter. Not a hot tea fan in the hot summer here.

You cannot change your sleeping pattern. If you always liked to stay up late in the evening you cannot change this. We always get up very early in the morning, but cannot stay up in the evening.

I agree with that. I have had 3-4 sleep studies done and it shows that I don't enter REM sleep stage until 5 am in the morning. We will just have to adjust, wing it, deal with it.

@LadyDuck Wow, you make it on 4 hours of sleep only? Do you take a nap?

@kareng We must adjust to our internal clock. I sleep well from 11 pm until maximum 3 am, then I wake up.

Yes and I already know I don't go into deep sleep until around 5 am so I may as well conform to my body's wants and needs.

Just try to set a routine that works for you. I lay down between midnight and 1 even if I dont feel sleepy yet.

That usually results in a lot of tossing and turning. Or reading for hours. We have been trying to ease the tiime back slowly a few minutes at a time.

@wolfgirl569 When I was younger I used to think of sleep as a waste of time. Now that I'm older, I like sleep. LOL.

I usually get into bed and do some reading before I can get to sleep but it depends on my dreams if any and how I feel because it si a good night if I can sleep all through it but something I get up really early and then I just cannot get back to sleep

My trouble is getting to sleep. I can read some nights for 10 minutes and then can't hold my eyes open. Other nights I read for a couple of hours and then sometimes I turn light off and have to turn it back on to read some more. But once aseep here lately, I have been sleeping well. It is a continuous struggle.

We don't sleep well either but we blame our age. We certainly don't go to bed early.

I have always heard older people don't need as much sleep. I have never been one to go to bed early and when I do get to sleep I sleep for a good eight hours or more sometimes. Some nights 6-7 are more the norm.

@kareng We may not need as much sleep but it's also much harder to fall asleep and/or stay asleep.

I go with the flow with what my body tells me. Growing up, my parents set a strict bedtime during the school year. In theroy this was good, but the older I became and the more stressed out I became it wasn't working for me. I'd be up all night, fuctioning on two to three hours of sleep a night. While you're working to adjust your sleeping patterns, just don't be hard on yourself if you have a day like today. Sometimes the body needs to say 'enough is enough' and force you to do what it wants.
