Wrongly Diagnosed

Robin Williams ended his life on August 11, 2014. He had been diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1991 and suffered from depression. But the autopsy showed he had been wrongly diagnosed and actually had Williams and Lewy body dementia. This disease is suffered by about 1.3 million people. Experts say a person with this disease develops memory and language problems (and so it is easy to see how the comedian was wrongly diagnosed.) Then, as it continues to develop, sufferers actually begin to have hallucinations. What a horrible way to live.
I have never heard of this disease and didn't know Robin had been given the wrong diagnosis. I wonder if knowing would have changed anything. I doubt it.

I have heard of Lewy Body Dementia and it’s a pretty common disease.
I think he would have still gone through depression if he found out he had dementia.

That sounds like a terrible disease. And so is Parkinson's in its own way. Not sure if the proper tag would have helped. Unless there are definitive treatments to both and they are different.

I really miss Robin.
I don't know that I have seen any of his work since he passed.
His loving wife spent much time researching the facts as to what really happened. With his zest and love for life, there was no way that he wanted to kill himself.

I can't watch him right now. Depression is weird. I think he had an ego and didn't want to continue knowing he would get worse, not better.

A proper diagnosis would have meant treatments and lifestyle changes that might have bought him a little bit more quality of life for a while. However, there is no cure.

Yes, and he was a public icon so his privacy would be something he probably had a problem with.

Terrible one way or another and I also don't think having the right diagnosis would have solved anything, Just terrible that he had to suffer like that and he was such a talented person

He had suffered from depression for years too. Many comedians seem to have that problem.

Yes, I have heard of others. I would think that doing comedic bits would help them work through a lot of issues. Don't you think?

@celticeagle Not really, that is just an act and not the real person inside.

I thought I heard that he was misdiagnosed but did not know about dementia. It sounds very bad and understand why he took his life. I loved him. He was so funny and great actor. I miss him a lot each day. A lot of the comedians are not alive now and I miss them all.

"Williams and Lewy body dementia." Now that's something you don't hear about every day. I've certainly never heard of it before now. No wonder he was misdiagnosed. His doctors probably never heard of it, either.
