….VERY INTERESTINK!!!! A couple of years ago I went to a “civilian” orthopedist office. They were the same office that treated my broken ankle in 2015, so I had faith in them. They took x-rays of my knee and broke the bad news to me: it was “bone-on-bone,” or the beginning of the end of the knee. When I’d need the knee replaced, they said, would depend on when I’d get tired of the pain. Ah, but there’s the old cortisone injection! I got one, and it lasted for nearly a year. This year I went back, right around my birthday, for another injection. While there, I asked about alternatives to knee replacement; more specifically, the so-called “rooster comb” injections. It’s this gelatinous stuff, similar to what a rooster’s comb is made from (hence the name), that they shoot into the places in the knee where cartilage used to be. These shots have a reputation for staving off knee replacement surgery for years, or even decades. Not so fast, the nurse practitioner said. Insurance won’t pay for those and they’re so expensive. No problem, I thought. I’ll just go to the VA hospital and see about getting it there. I know they’ll give them, because my brother had them for about 20-some-odd years. So, today, I went to the occupational therapist for my consultation. My head was already spinning because I was going to Occupational and Rehabilitative Services instead of to the orthopedic clinic. I came away with great news: the VA’s x-rays, taken about ten days ago, show that not only is there NOT bone-on-bone deterioration in my knee, but my knee is actually in pretty darn good shape for my age. (I threw that in there, the doctor didn’t say it to me. ) The plan is exercises, some neurotransmitter meds (think Gabapentin), and the chiropractor to see if my back is the source of the radiating pain. Or if it’s just being over 60 and having fibromyalgia. But it’s extremely interesting to me that I got such contradictory diagnoses. I was thinking about that episode of M*A*S*H where Henry told Radar, “I don’t know all the medicine in the world, but I can read an x-ray with one eye tied behind my back.” Maybe the “civilian” clinic couldn’t. Yes, it’s interesting. I’m not angry or anything…just thankful that I don’t have to worry about my knees for a while. Here’s Arte Johnson’s iconic catchphrase from Laugh-In for all you kids
Arte Johnson's as Wolfgang the German classic "Very Interesting" from "Laugh In"

Truthfully, the VA’s diagnosis. Reason being, I remember how much pain my dear aunt of blessed memory was in when her knees were “bone-on-bone” worn out. I’m nowhere NEAR that pain. In fact, when I described the pain he said it was more of a fibromyalgia complaint (burning sensation) than what people with worn-out knees describe (grinding).

That's odd that they didn't see that. My best friend just had hip surgery. She had been in a lot pain.

it seems to make sense now that the orthopedist office balked at the rooster comb injections. My insurance would’ve paid for it, so that might be an indication that they “over-exaggerated” the knee issue.

I've always wondered why they couldn't just inject some collagen or silicon to replace the cartilege.

I would guess — strictly a guess, because I’m not a doctor and I don’t play one on TV — that the success of that depends on if there’s any other damage to the knee. If the knee is healthy otherwise, it seems that would work.

I fully believe in second opinions and glad you got an encouraging one. Hopefully you might never need surgery with these other options.

medicine is more black art than science. they study science for years and then they wander off into the land of supposition.

Ah, when I first read the title I thought "Hogan's heroes"--but I vaguely remember Laugh-In. Loved M*A*S*H*, too.

That is great that you found out in time and I am glad for you, I have found that not even seeing a doctor I notice the different in my bum knee that would go out on me, My friends gave me a pushcart thingy and when I walk and hold on to it my knee works fine I just need to get out a bit more,

It's good news that the VA doesn't think you need knee replacement. Hope they're right and the exercise and chiropractor can help with the pain I remember Laugh In and Arte johnson....

It must be frustrating to be told one thing then shortly after be told another. You wouldn't think it could be that hard.

I'm so happy that you don't have to have the knee done. The knee is much harder and more painful to recover from than a hip. (I've had both replaced.) I know what you mean by misdiagnosis. I had one ortho surgeon tell me I needed back surgery done NOW; and one told me I was fine. WTH?

That is great news. It pays to get another opinion. Love this Arte quote, have not thought of it in ages.

Well that is good, glad got you in better spirits and people can talk smack all they want but I usually trust VA over money doctors any day, but have to be careful there because some are bitter they not making more, but they know where the private sector is. That was my only beef when went to VA how doctors looked down on you or maybe was just me but even private doctors were less rude. I take that back They were pretty rude to when did my eye check for employment. I am like I cannot see that. I swear sometimes they get mad at us because we messed up physically. It did not matter for him all he to say was yes or no and he passed me with cannot see. He was going to get paid either way.

That certainly is fabulous news if they’re right! At least you have options if not. Sounds great to me!
