My son hardly ever go out from the time the pandemic started. He's 17 and unlike other teenagers, he would rather stay home than break the protocol. Yesterday, we decided to drive around the city and checked out the malls just to see what's new. A lot of shops closed down. Etude House, a Korean beauty product store is no longer there, some restaurants, boutiques. But to my surprise, a new Birkenstock store has opened! And of course I was delighted. My son stopped me from buying anything from there so I might just go back when he's not with me.

Yes. In this city teens are already allowed to be outside. It's not the same in your city yet?

We had stores that closed and never opened. For awhile the only stores open were grocery stores and pharmacies.

@RubyHawk Here the malls would remove everything. Including the store glass enclosures and doors. Nothing left but an empty space which they cover with wood panels.

It's the same here during the lockdown but the restrictions eased up a bit. Those stores I mentioned are closed permanently because their space in the mall no longer exists. No more signage of their store name.

@toniganzon Some of ours are still standing empty. I suppose they went broke while they were closed likely couldn’t pay their rent.

We live in a tropical country where having slippers and sandals are essentials. And we loved Birkenstock slippers coz they last a really really long time. They quality is amazing. I never saw any of their shoes. Just sandals and slippers.

My kids are also just in the house. Good thing your son an go to the mall. I do not think 17 years old and below are allowed to go inside the mall. They are only allowed for outdoor dining I think

Birkenstock shoes are associated with comfort, so the timing on opening a new store sort of makes sense. Plus, a number of people have actually made money during the pandemic, so there are those who can afford to support the store.

Which is a bit surprising for me coz that shop sells expensive sandals which is considered a bit of a luxury here.

There are many small stores that are closed nowadays because of the pandemic.
