A New House for Mr Hissy

Mr Hissy's new house

Mr Hissy, the stray black cat, lives in the garden and has his own little house, in the overgrown corner of the garden, since last year. It doesn’t have a flap over the door, so I am sure it gets a bit windy and chilly in the winter. I ordered him a new house that is a bit bigger and has a flap over the door, as well as a window! The window is tinted for those sunny days. Actually, the new house is a lot bigger than I expected and heavier, too! So far he won’t get too close to it, I don’t think he likes cat flaps. What I love about it is that it has an ‘upstairs’ bedroom, or mezzanine shelf as they call it. I laid out a fleecy blanket on the shelf and put an igloo in the main space. There is enough room in the main space that I can put in a meal feeder with a time delay for when I am off exploring. Hopefully, with some gently encouragement he will move in. I have left his old house next to the new one and he is still in that one, as I saw his eyes reflecting my torchlight.

If he's content with his old house, I'd probably leave him alone. (He may feel like you're evicting him if you get rid of the old one.)

@Ronrybs I'd move into the garden during the summer and back into a "shed" in the colder weather, too.

@DaddyEvil Just had a look and he is still in his old house. Not that cold, but there are fireworks going off. He is a tough cat!

True, I am not going to force him out, but some treats may just swing it. He also has the neighbours' shed for those very cold nights. That is where he used to live until he moved into the garden.

I am jealous that you have a whisker.

@Ronrybs I lost my whisker early this year. We moved to another place and he ran away in the neighborhood. It is almost a year and we did not see any sightings of him lately.

If I was small enough, say like an elf maybe, I would adore that little house. What a lucky kitty he is. Such a good buy and nice cat caretaker you are Ron.

This cat house is wonderful. I have a house for the cat the neighbors left behind, but this one is a lot better. I am sure my cat would love this one.

@Ronrybs It takes a lot of time before a cat feels safe to use a cat house. My cat Gevi did not dare to go inside during at least 3 months. Now he is inside all the time.

I am not the greatest handyman and I don't think it was the best fit. I need to put some sealant on the seams and while the floor has some insulation I think I shall get some carpet tiles to put down

@Ronrybs That's a good idea. Shame you are not nearer, I have some spare carpet tiles and also some small pieces that I think were once from one of those sample 'books'.

@Ronrybs You can do that. Doesn't sound too complicated. Some carpet stores sell odd sizes of leftovers. Maybe you could measure the floor and pick up carpet like that.

It might just take time for him to get used to it. Start feeding him in the new one, and that'll help him get used to it faster.

What a kind soul you are! And a tinted window too! Some cats don't know when they're well off. That sounds a really lovely house for Mr Hissy.
