An odd concern

United States

As we were looking over our new lease earlier, my husband paused. He had found a part that deeply concerned him. What, might you ask, was so concerning? There is a part about disruptive pets. Specifically mentioned, "barking." I know that our male cat has many interesting quirks. He even has some doglike behaviors at times. However, he has yet to manage to take up barking. Has your spouse come out with something strange like that? Something that you can't quite figure out why they would zero in on that particular thing?

I have heard people complain about barking dogs. The people across the hall have a dog that barks but it’s not Too bothersome to me anyway.

I do understand why the lease might include language to address barking. I'm still confused, though, why my husband was concerned about it. We have two cats; neither has managed to take up barking yet.

@wilsongoddard Oh, I see, That’s a little odd that your husband was concerned since you have no dogs.

He can be chatty, but there's no barking from him. I don't know what my husband was so concerned about.

Umm, I would say since you have cats, barking shouldn't be a major concern.

@wilsongoddard Did you look at him strangely, and say..."Have you ever known our cats to bark?" I would have for sure.

Yeah, that was basically my reaction. I do sometimes wonder about my husband's thought process. He is a good guy, but he does sometimes come up with really strange things like this.

Well, there goes the idea of getting a dog anytime soon.

They only allow two pets there anyways. We have two fuzzy family members, so adding a dog isn't possible until we buy a place.

@rebelann I want to try before I buy with an area. We did briefly own a house, and we sold it because the area was something that Dante wrote about. It might serve as a good basis for a novel or two one of these days, though.

I don't have a spouse, so would think it really odd if mine found anything to complain about. The next-door neighbor's dog barks any time I turn on the light in the kitchen or if it can hear me moving around in my kitchen... It's extremely annoying. It's not like I'm making noises a person could hear outside. My daughter doesn't even hear me when I'm in the kitchen...

Apparently, the dog considers your house part of his territory. Must. Defend. Territory.

@DaddyEvil Poor pup. Hopefully, he will "accidentally" get loose and wander off down the road to someone who gives him a proper home.

@wilsongoddard That's entirely possible. He belongs to the neighbors who don't take care of their pets. The dog might get fed in the morning but doesn't have a place to go out of the cold and isn't allowed inside their house. If he isn't taken inside when it snows, I'll be calling one of the groups around here who take care of animals.

Many hotels allow dogs but if you have the room next door it can be awful at times. Because cats are less noisy they are allowed more often.

Dogs can get rather noisy. Although, I've also witnessed some real vocal displays from cats as well. Our boy does talk, but he isn't a nonstop meow-er, thankfully. I think that more space should (hopefully) get him to calm down some.

@MarshaMusselman Our boy would be heartbroken if he weren't able to be next to us. Our two sleep in bed at night and spend much of the day cuddling up with us if they can.

My neighbors in the subdivision we used to live in used to make comments about my parrots. I had one that was very talkative and also liked to sing. The man liked him and always laughed and said he enjoyed him but I don't think his wife was on the same page as he was.

We do have a cat that really does bark when she gets excited. But, no. George isn't always the most observent.

Did your cat have a dog she was really attached to when she was a baby? Our cat will sit, raise his head like he's getting in touch with some wolf ancestry that he doesn't actually have, and let out a, "ME-OW." However, he has never let out anything that would be considered a bark. He also isn't that loud--just loud for a one-bedroom apartment.

Seems a bit odd if neither your husband or the cat barks

My husband can be an odd man sometimes. It's good, though, that they didn't say anything about snoring, since my hubby and both of the cats are prone to doing so.

No, our cats don't bark. Our male cat meows a bit sometimes, but the paperwork specified "barking." So, my husband's concern about it seemed a bit odd.

@jefferson126 I think that it's possible that he is training our male cat to be a dog.
