Along with favorites with “fly” in the title I’m doing a companion countdown of songs with an airplane theme. Today’s song doesn’t have “plane” in the title, and you may not immediately think of it as an “airplane” song, but that’s part of its charm. To nobody’s surprise, look who’s showing up on another one of my lists…..
#3: Early Morning Rain - Gordon Lightfoot
Early morning? And rain? That’s not airplane-related!
True, but poor ol’ Gord is experiencing all of this misery at the airport.
For all the great train songs he provided (“Canadian Railroad Trilogy,” “Steel Rail Blues”) he’s singing about a “big 707 set to go” while he’s “stuck here on the ground, cold and drunk as I could be.” He even acknowledges his train songs: “you can’t jump a jet plane like you can a freight train.”
No, I didn’t invent this countdown just to throw another Elton John or Gordon Lightfoot song at you. The suggestion came from @JamesHxstatic . But I’m sure glad I can pull a favorite Lightfoot song out again!

Hey, it's one of the Lightfoot's most covered songs and deserving of a place on your list.

@fourwalls One excellent song. First heard Peter Paul and Mary’s version. I suppose Ebony Eyes would fit into your current theme - no plane in the title but it’s set in an airport. Sentimental bilge of course.
