Will you just shut up!

I’m sure I’ve complained about this before, but still, here I am again. A nice quiet morning, mild and dry, I’m looking out of the window watching the birds while doing some work, and then…. Brrrrrrr…..Brrrrrrr……Brrrrrr Vvvvvvv…..vvvvvvvvvv…..vvvvvvvvvvv…….vvvvvvvvvvv My three immediate neighbours each employ a gardener (the same one) and they all have grass that needs mowing, hedges that need trimming and, right now, fallen leaves that need tidying away. And it seems he is unable to perform any of these tasks without the use of power tools. What’s wrong with a good old-fashioned brush or rake? I’m trying to enjoy my own garden and concentrate on my own work and I just want to go out and yell ‘Will you just SHUT UP!’ But of course he’s only doing his job. And anyway he wouldn’t hear me because he always wears ear defenders. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2021.

You should see what it was at my home when the neighbors bought the house next door and remodeled. The workers took ages and only used power tools. I don´t mind a nice hammer but those screeching sounds for so long a time almost drove me crazy.

@fleura This was one of the noise issues that just about pushed my wife over the edge and led to us moving house in the summer. Next door had a weekly team of gardeners who filled the air with the poisonous rasp of power tools. Their garden was immaculate and weeds never got the chance to grow. In autumn sinful leaves were the cause of extra visits from leaf blower warriors. Madness, and an irresponsible waste of money and an attack on the natural order of things.

AArgh it is maddening. And yes someone needs to point out all the pollution and CO2 produced by power-mad gardeners!

Sometime I really miss old school. All of these newfangled noise makers drives me nuts too at times. Today the city was trimming some of the hedges in the lot next door and it got me a little annoyed too.

@Fleura Oh that is so true. And then there are those times when the weather is so nice and taking a little longer to do the yard work can actually be therapeutic. Of course most people won't see it that way.

Me too. I mean I understand that some of them make jobs much easier but others aren't easier or quicker so why not save fuel and noise?

Have you not heard of ear plugs!

Why should I have to wear ear plugs in my own home? And also that would make it difficult to talk to my family and listen to other things I wanted to hear.

If there is something I hate to hear is the leaves blower, noisy and it takes forever. I do a much better job with my rake.

@Fleura I bought one, at least it also works as a vacuum, I tried it as blower, but it is too noisy and it takes forever to blow the leaves.

I've never tried using one but watching other people it doesn't look much easier and it's certainly heavier and more noisy and smelly.

There seems to be a noisy machine for every chore nowadays.

No kidding! When I was little I remember lying in bed listening to the comforting hum of my parents using the vacuum cleaner. Sometimes they even used to 'Hoover' under my bed while I was in it. Now we have a modern vacuum cleaner and the operator and anyone in the vicinity has to use ear defenders or leave the house. Apparently there is an ongoing increase in the incidence of deafness - do you think there might be any connection??

@JudyEv I expect most don't, as you say, and I bet very few people use ear defenders when vacuuming either - although there is a clear warning label on the machine! They probably think it's uncool or too much hassle. But losing hearing has a massive impact on quality of life.

@Fleura And how many DIYers use power tools without bothering with ear protection? Though they are probably a bit better now than they used to be.

They don't even think any more, they just automatically assume that using a heavy, noisy, vibrating machine must be easier then traditional tools, but that isn't always true.

My next door neighbor just announced me that he was having some renovations done for the next 3 weeks. He already got a new A/C last week and they made a lot of noises.

Don't you have any power tools? Go out after the gardener has stopped making noise and tie the trigger of your power tools down so they run at full blast and just leave them lying on the ground while running. Put on good headphones so you can't hear them. It's not going to help anything, but maybe you'll feel better at least.

Tempting, but I don't want to just add to the noise and pollution. And anyway once he's finished, he leaves!

I accept lawn mowers and I use a strimmer, as my garden is so small, but I draw the line at blowers and those outdoor vacuum thingies!

A rake or a brush is just as good as a leaf blower, I really don't get it. Some people just have a fixation with power tools I guess.

Power tools. I own a petrol lawnmower. That's it. Once.a month between May.and October for 10 minutes. Got a neighbour though who has many and they do indeed make a bit of a noise for long periods. Not good
