I think the wheel chair weighs more

Today and tomorrow we have to go over to our district Performing Arts Center. Today was rehearsal and tomorrow is the third grade Christmas music program.
Out of caution for the community we are choosing not to mix the grades together and fill the auditorium with people and germs. So we are having each class do a small performance.
The logistics prevent us from using the bus with the handicap lift. Instead, I use a van.
I lift the student into a car seat.
Mom says he weighs forty-three pounds.
Then I lift the wheel chair into the back. I think it weighs more.
Mostly everyone is too busy to help me. So it is all up to me.
I think the wheel chair weighs more than the kid. At the very least it is more awkward to lift.
So that is why I am tired tonight.

I don't doubt you're tired after wrestling that much weight around by yourself. The school should consider the weight of the person and the wheelchair and assign someone to help you with them. If you hurt your back, the school district will be out more money paying the bills for your injuries than they would paying someone to help you.

For everyone's sake they need to send a second bus, the handicapped bus, with a wheel chair lift. The principal, for instance was to help me one way, but he had to fill in for a sick teacher. PE teacher had to get back to school for his next class.

@GardenGerty It's not right that they make you handle everything by yourself.

@DaddyEvil I agree. It's really not fair and quite risky.

@RubyHawk If it was one inch wider it would not fit.

One of the other teachers helped me going over. We figured out how to make that wheel chair fit the van.

If it's one of those motorised wheelchairs, I don't doubt that it weighs more than the kid. The battery alone must weight 10 lbs.

No, just a standard wheel chair. The motorized ones I would not be able to lift as they weigh over 300 pounds.

Wheel chairs on adverage weigh a lot more than the person who's using them. You can get some light weight ones, but depending on the needs of the user, you or they wouldn't notice.

@GardenGerty I happen to be in one, so I kind of know. Especially given the age of the child. As an adult, I am sure I weigh more than my chair, but I also know what does and doesn't add weight in a chair.

@kaylachan Yes, I knew you have a wheel chair. His is fairly straight forward, but even the special cushions add weight.

The rehearsal was fun. I am hoping they will take better measures in the future for transportation.

They need to take the handicap bus.I am probably the strongest para they have. We do not have many men on staff to help. I would be covered by workman's comp.
