The echidna that stopped a motor race

The Mount Panorama 500 (better known nationally as the Bathurst 1000) is an Australian motor racing event and was recently held at the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales. The race always creates a great deal of interest and rev heads – sorry, motor-racing enthusiasts) stay glued to their TV screens for the duration of the event. In case you don’t know, if there is an accident or some other incident, a safety car comes onto the track and the drivers must all fall in line behind the safety car. They are not allowed to pass each other until the all clear is given and the safety car exits. The safety car was called out several times during this year’s race but one incident was noteworthy. An echidna wandered onto the track. Heaven knows how he found his way there. It’s nice to think they held up the race so it wouldn’t get squashed. The echidna is a monotreme, like the platypus. It is warm-blooded but lays eggs. The photo is mine of an echidna we saw on our travels. It’s hard to get a photo of its head. It’s pretty much all spines.

I know very well about car race and the safety car... I lived 31 years in Monte Carlo! How big is an echidna compared to a porcupine? I think they are similar.

The echidna is 'small-sized' and the porcupine 'a large-sized rodent' but I couldn't find actual measurements in Wikipedia.

@JudyEv The porcupine is pretty big, the hedgehogs are a lot smaller, but they can be pretty big. One went to sleep inside the cat house the past week and I moved it to the garden, it was quite heavy.

@judyev I think I’d give such a prickly creature a wide berth myself.

I wonder if it would have punctured their tyres.

It is it the same thing as porcupine, or slightly different?

Porcupines don't lay eggs.

They both have spines but the echidna seems to be almost all spines up. And, as @barbaraPrz says, they don't lay eggs.

I'm not a fan of car racing - it is so dangerous - to participants and spectators - I recall reports of cars going into crowds, killing officials and of course drivers. I'm thinking, yeah to the echidna! It may have saved a few people from injury or worse.

I'm glad they stopped the race while the echidna crossed. And yes, car-racing is dangerous.

@sulynsi I don't know Elmer. Maybe she wasn't used in Australia.

Thankfully the echidna was saved. At first glance, I thought that was a porcupine.

It looks like a porcupine. Are they the same or just similar?

@MALUSE's link has some much better photos. I have a better one on a 2016 post too:
I was thrilled to see three echidnas during our two-weeks away. They are not often seen in the open and seeing three was a rare treat. Echidnas and platypuses...

It's a bit different, isn't it? There is a better photo of it here:

I'm not sure if it would be the same creature. I thought they were only found in Australia. Maybe it was a porcupine you used to see.

@Hannihar It is very prickly indeed. You would need to handle it with very heavy gloves.

I wonder if his spines were strong enough to pierce tyres? However, I'm sure they weren't.

I wonder what brought it to the race track? It must have been deaf, surely! Glad it survived.

Deaf indeed. I don't know if they picked it up or just waited till it got across.
