A jumping castle escapes its moorings

You may have heard of the terrible tragedy that hit a primary school in Tasmania. An inflatable ‘jumping castle’ came loose from its moorings and became airborne. Four children plunged about ten metres to their deaths and another one died in hospital overnight. Others are still in hospital; three of them in critical condition. The children were at an end-of-year celebration. School children in our states have now finished school for the year. It is summer here but it will still be very hot when the kids go back in early February These castles are very popular in Australia at parties and fetes. Of course, some are much bigger than others. This will no doubt bring in new laws about how these castles are secured to the ground. Such a tragedy.

I heard about this on the 7am news. Wind is getting quite vicious these days. We had gusts up to 90 km/hr today. Bouncy castles are popular here, too.

They're quite popular here. I guess I'd get the kidlets out if the wind started blowing hard.

There will be an inquiry into how this was allowed to happen. Accidents happen so easily. It's just tragic.

@TheHorse You don't think about them tearing away from their moorings. This one ended up in a tree.

@cacay1 Mostly the castles are taken to a school or fair and inflated on the site. They have been banned from schools for the moment.

@LadyDuck They gave examples of several deaths on the news tonight but in each instance, it was just one child.

@RebeccasFarm I guess most of the accidents happen if they're not tied down properly.

That's very sad indeed. Such castles if they are not safe should be banned.

They have now been banned from schools until an inquiry has been held. It is a dreadful thing to have happened.

It's quite a small town so there will be many affected, even if not directly.

And the other children would have minor injuries or have lost their friends. It's just awful whichever way you look at it.

I just read about that today. What a horrific thing to happen in the middle of a joyous celebration! I can't even begin to imagine the pain those parents are experiencing. They are probably still in shock.

Teachers, fellow students, parents - all will be devastated. They were in their last year of primary school and would have been looking forward to high school.
