An early Christmas lunch and a visit to the goats

The photo shows my sister’s goats. They should all kid (have babies) within the next month. Raising and milking goats is now my nephew’s full-time occupation. He has all the common breeds of goats including Saanens and Nigerian dwarfs. The latter are very popular as pets and as milking goats for households. My nephew is an accredited goat judge and has been asked to judge in Queensland in February. Whether he is able to go or not depends on COVID and whether borders are closed or not. He has booked his ticket and taken out insurance against the trip being cancelled. We had a Christmas lunch there today with four of my nephews and their partners/wives. It was a very enjoyable time but of course most of us ate far too much.

There is a house down the road from our elementary school. They have goats penned up in their yard. Little Miss often tells me that she wants to have a goat when we get our own home. Hubby said that he will get her a couple of them. Hopefully he will take care of them. LOL

@JudyEv I am going to put a stop to the idea before it actually happens.

@ElusiveButterfly That's probably a very good idea. Pets can make a lot of work but a cat or dog is probably easier.

Glad you had a good lunch and a nice visit, How I love those goats, I would be asking them for goat cheese which I love but cannot get due to expense,

I don't think they've tried making goat cheese yet. Most of the milk goes to the kids.

Nice looking herd. Would they really eat that tree if it wasn't in jail?

Yes, they are browsers more than grazers and love most tree foliage.

@BarBaraPrz Yes, they eat the bark as well and so the trees then die. I guess there are some trees where they leave the bark alone. I guess it depends how much there is around for them to eat.

I remember you mentioned that your nephew is a goat judge, I hope he will not be obliged to cancel his trip. Those goats are too cute.

@JudyEv I know, many European countries are deciding a new lockdown. Silly politicians, they open up everything and too early and then they have to decide lockdowns... never a middle way decision. They should try to use their brain.

@LadyDuck If we open our borders and Omicron gets a hold, it will be pretty pointless closing them again. The damage will have been done.

Air flights are so 'up in the air' now - so to speak. You never know when a flight will be cancelled or borders shut.

We had a lunch here at the village yesterday and I bought home some leftover cream cake. I can see a diet coming up after Christmas - actually, make that after New Year!!!

Air transport is so iffy at the moment. You don't know from one minute to the next if borders will be shut.

@JudyEv That nubian alpine cross I had gave way too much for us. But was easy to contain. I know some of the small breeds have extremely springy legs Its fun watching them until they clear the fence

The well-bred Saanens give too much milk for most families. And they eat more.

My sister's kitty thinks they make great warmers! She sleeps in the dog kennels with them. I had a photo but can't find it at the moment. Here is the dog kennel and six or eight babies will crowd in and keep each other warm.

I always wind up eating to much too. Then I feel guilty after. Lots of different looking goats in the photo. Must be a really fun place to visit especially when there are kids.

They enjoyed all the attention and a couple of the babies got an extra bottle of milk as the kids - sorry, children - wanted to feed them.

@judyev I take it goat was not on the menu. I’ve only had it once, curried in Malawi when we broke down in the middle of nowhere and catered for by people who seemed to have nothing but gave us everything.
