The photo I promised

I wrote some time back that we were installing a vertical bed in our second bedroom. When it is not being used, it can be folded up against the wall, thus freeing up the floor space. We bought Ikea cupboards to go on each side and I also bought a new bedspread for the bed. When I first wrote about it, I promised I’d take a photo of it when it was all finished. So here is the photo. When you want to put it away, you fold the blankets away from the sides, put a strap over it and lift it up into the space. There are hydraulic rams on each side which makes lifting the mattress and bedding very easy. I think that is the last big thing that we need to do in our new house.

I think they are called hide-a-beds or something else here. But, it comes in handy for small spaces.

We call the “Murphy beds” here in America.

@FourWalls I forgot about them being Murphy beds although I remember learning that when I first wrote about them.

We shouldn't need the bed often so it seemed a good idea for this situation.

That does look nice. What are you using the floor space for when the bed is folded away?

I usually do the ironing in there or I might want to put up a small table to do a jigsaw. And I have a lot of photos to sort one day and would like to be able to leave them on a table while I sort through them.

@DaddyEvil This is pretty different from our other house. We didn't really have to think about saving space there.

Terrific idea!! I’ve watched videos of RVs that have Murphy beds (what we call them here….why, I don’t know) in them! What a space-saving idea!

Gosh, I've never seen them in RVs but that would be a great idea. You'd need to have the height though although some fold up sideways which might be better.

@JudyEv — the Leisure Travel Van company has TWO models with Murphy beds. At about the 5:50 time on the linked video below you’ll see the bed come down, with NO slide! (The other model does have a slide.)

It looks very pretty now, I like the bedspread also. Those wall beds are good for the guest room, better than the sofa-beds.

@JudyEv I agree that it looks a lot better with the cupboards and they make a useful additional space.

Thanks. I think the cupboards make the whole thing look better than just the bed on its own. My brother-in-law has slept in it twice and says it is very comfortable.

@JudyEv I bet you are relieved that you found the bed and that is great that you can put it in the wall when you do not need it and have the space. Thank you for sharing the photo with us.

It looks great, I love the pretty birds that you have on the shelves and a couple in the bedspread. You could call that the bird room.

Ikea don't make vertical beds. It must be the only thing they don't make as they seem to make everything else.

That is an innovative way to use the space flexibly. It needs to double up as a bed only when needed and guests staying overnight are a rare breed nowadays for us!
