Why The Cloud?

I don't get it. Why use the cloud? Why pay monthly for using the cloud to store your pictures and documents and whatever else? I have used a thumb drive for years and never a problem. Now if the cloud is hacked or you don't have access to it for whatever reason how convenient is that? I wouldn't use it.

I agree... I've asked people that for years and never got a satisfactory answer.

@DaddyEvil ......I wouldn't want someone to be going through my personal documents either. Not adult stuff but still.

@celticeagle Yeah, my stuff is my stuff. If I invite someone to see something, that's different.

I use Icloud for the sole purpose of transferring the pictures I take with my iphone to my computer which is windows based. Now I have a backup to what ever is on icloud on my external hard drive.

QVC had a app or something that does all that. It was like a thumb drive you just put on your phone and it stores them all.

I don't want to store all my shots on my phone, I prefer saving them on external hard drives.

@rebelann ......We all have our different ways of storing and what works for us. It's nice to have options.

I use the cloud, and have no problem with it. No matter the product, there's always a risk attached. The question, is the risk worth it? For example, like the cloud, a thumb drive has limited storage. So, if you need more storage, you need to buy a new one. Or, empty some files. And, like with the cloud, if something happens to that thumb drive, you lose what's on it. With the cloud, the only real risk is if the server it's stored on crashes. But, you're not tied down to one device, and you don't ever have to worry, if the technology will exceed your device's capabilities.

I'd just rather have complete access at my fingertips any time. Not have my materials somewhere else.

I pay for automatic backups. If you remember to save your files, then a thumb drive is very useful and economical.
