Star Songs: Catch a Falling Star (#7)

As usual, I’m watching snow falling on web cams. Unfortunately, they’re local web cams. The city is doing okay, but the heavier snow is falling in the southern and eastern parts of Kentucky. We won’t see the stars in the sky tonight because of the cloud cover, but that doesn’t mean I can’t give you another song with “star” in the title. This theme was suggested by @RasmaSandra and I hope she’s enjoying it. #7: Catch a Falling Star - Perry Como Sometimes I feel like Perry Como at Woodstock (Bartender in a gay bar in Brothers) The other day I promised @DianneN I would not say “they can’t all be Bing Crosby” to her one day. Well, this is that day. Yes, Perry Como and his cardigan sweaters were a joke (and still are, probably), but dang that man could sing. I have one of his songs on my 100 favorites list. Yes, amid the Clash and David Bowie songs, there sits Perry Como. This was Como’s last #1 hit (understandable, considering that rock and roll was taking over by the time this was released in 1957). It won him a Grammy as well. And it remains a pop standard from a long-forgotten (by most) but long-loved (by some, still) singing great. Catch a Falling Star Written by Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss Recorded by Perry Como Released as a single, 1957 Love may come and tap you on the shoulder:

He isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Some people use his music when they have insomnia.

@JimBo452020 — that’s what Engelbert Humperdink is for: heavy-duty insomnia cases.

When I was young, I thought that Perry Como was so boring, but now that I am older I appreciate him more. My favorite song of his is "And I Love You So".

Perry is too high energy and exciting for me. I saw him in Vegas once and then had to go to a Kiss concert to calm down.

Oh, I enjoy Perry Como, too. Not a lot, because that’s not my “era” of music, but good music is good music, period.

As I said li wasn’t raised on pop standards, but they were still prevalent so I could see the stars on TV when I was a kid. Obviously it stuck with me.

I was thirteen years old when the song was released. When I read the title, it came back to me at once! It's wonderfully schmaltzy.

Yes, not all of those “Tin Pan Alley” songs were well written, but they are delightful to listen to! (I wasn’t even born when this came out, which makes me very thankful for records and a mother who liked a variety of things.)
