As silent as a rock

or maybe a marshmallow.
I went running around a few places today, including Dollar General in Hillsboro. If you live in the states you know DG stores are everywhere. But that is not the discussion.Everywhere I went, there were lots of people, with lots of children.
Noisy, and in my way each corner I turned. I got what I came for and headed to the check out.
The person running the register said not one word. Not "hello", "did you find what you needed" or "do you want your receipt" or "have a nice day."
Do not get me wrong. She LOOKED cheery and like someone who would be pleasant. She had on a hat with a pompom on top, a mask of course, and a cute white sweater/ jacket with embroidery and applique of a snow scene. She was wearing fingerless gloves as well. I suppose she felt chilly up near the door.
She absolutely did not say one word while I checked out.
The end.
Silent as a snowfall perhaps. Who knows.

I have to at least say "hello". She really looked like she could be friendly. I do not do chirpy, either.

@PhredWreck
I don't do "chirpy". I usually tell people to have a good day.

@PhredWreck Or, she smoked a bit too much before showing up for work.

To me that's rude. Aren't they supposed to be friendly to give people a reason to want to go back?
I haven't been in a DG in years, the last time I did go into one the cashier spoke to me in Spanish as if I was supposed to understand her.

Those are the closest things near me. Yes, you should at least say "Hello" or maybe "buenos dios"

I was surprised she didn't @GardenGerty but boy did she rattle off something and was smiling so I know it wasn't anything mean but what kind of business hires someone in the US who doesn't speak English?

Maybe if you didn't go around speaking Spanish all the time, people wouldn't do that to you.

I decided she might be too bundled up to talk.

With the way she was dressed she may have been very cold and ready to go home

It is a cold spot if you have to stay up there. She also may be in charge of refrigerated cases when not manning the register.

I did not know that there was a minimum daily requirement. I could easily go over that.

I went to 2 different Dollar Generals today to get the 25 cent deals on all of their leftover Christmas stuff. I had a ball. The 2nd one I went to had a cashier that was SO cheery I thought that surely she must be new. She was saying hello to everyone that came in, and after the checked it she had a very cheery exit line to say to them like, "Goodbye, enjoy the sunshine out there" etc. It was odd to me to have a cashier be that cheery but nice at the same time. My cashier was the opposite of yours I would say!
