Our wedding photos are so similar to those of our friends

We went to our friends’ golden wedding celebration last weekend. The flower girl from the wedding was there but, of course, all grown up. She had brought the dress that she wore at the wedding and it was displayed along with an album of wedding photos. What I found interesting was how similar the photos were to ours. We celebrated our golden wedding just a few months ago. I have one of me adjusting my father’s buttonhole; one of friends adjusting my veil, the family group outside the church. You can see those of our friends’ in the photo. On other pages were photos of the bride reflected in a mirror, the couple getting into the car, on the dance floor, etc. These are all duplicated in our album too. It’s like there is a set of ‘photos that must be taken’.

Yes, it wouldn't have been my choice but perhaps that was the fashion then.

@judyev Poses seem to be a generational thing. The photos of my parents’ wedding are identical to those of all their friends and relatives who got married in the mid 1950s. Nowadays I note that the trend is to display as much flesh as possible.

@JudyEv Which means perhaps that a well-covered bride may not just be being demure, but that she has an embarrassing tattoo she wishes not to share.

Exposing flesh also gives maximum exposure to tattoos. Don't forget them.

@xFiacre It doesn't seem to matter. No--one seems to bother to cover them up.

I think that all the photos of marriages of the 70s are very similar. I also have one reflected in a mirror, we did not dance in the north of Italy, so I do not have that one, but I have the one in Church in front of the Priest and the one while signing after we were declared "husband and wife".

@JudyEv It depends on when and where the wedding is here. If they have an outdoor one you see some of those

They tend to take a lot more outdoor ones here now - with the sea as background or leaning against trees or whatever.

Yes, I think so. Vince took wedding photos for a while as a sideline and his worst faux pas was, at on wedding, not getting a photo of the bride with her mother.

@Ronrybs Lucky it was only a sideline eh?? At the time, Vince was the only photographer in a quite remote town so it didn't affect business too much.

The photo poses that you describe are really what we had also when we married in 1987. The only photo pose that I do not see alot of any more is that of the bride gazing into a mirror.

@JudyEv I think that the wedding pictures that I have seen over the past decade really reflect the venue where the couple has their photos done. Our son and his wife had their wedding at an old inn, in a very historic part of the city, the decor on the inside was very historic, so their photos are that way also. It suited them, not everyone is the same.

I haven't actually seen any wedding photos for a long time. They do seem to pose people among trees and with different backdrops perhaps more than they used to.

I guess there is a limit to how 'different' you can get. I'm always looking for something a bit different when we take the horse photos - getting them framed by trees or whatever.

Wow, that is an achievement ! Congratulations to them. I think you're right - there are certain of photos that "have" to be taken. We took wedding photos once - Bride and dad was one that requested

@FayeHazel He did it as a sideline many years ago. He was the only photographer in a remote town and he loved taking photos so he thought 'why not'? There is no way he'd take it up now. We'll stick to the horse photos. lol

When I was young girl, those polka dots were so much in fashion. And I loved it. Till now I absolutely love it.. When it comes to wedding photography, I totally agree that there is a set of photos that have to be taken.

I bet the photographers back then posed people in similar ways. I wondered why that little dress was by the photos I thought it so odd until I read what you wrote. So amazing that she kept it all those years and then she was able to display it for them like this.

You are right, photographers tend to follow a certain list of 'expected shots' which changes with the times. Nowadays it often features bride getting ready (not so often the groom, for some reason, maybe a half-dressed man is not so photogenic?!), guests and groom waiting, bride arriving at venue, the service/ceremony (obviously), signing the register, then couple with his family, couple with her family, different groups of friends, cutting the cake etc etc. All very samey.
