A fun musical piece

We’ve just finished watching a YouTube clip of a guy playing ‘The Typewriter’. This short composition was written by American composer Leroy Anderson. An actual typewriter is used in the performance and I thought maybe you hadn’t heard of it and might enjoy it. Do you remember these old-style typewriters with the carriage returns and a bell to warn you when you were getting near the end of the paper? In our brass band days, we played this once or twice at concerts. It’s a bit of light-hearted fun and the ‘typist’ obviously enjoys his role. I the link won’t work and you’d like to see it, maybe search for ‘typewriter orchestra’ and it should come up. Photo is mine.

That is wonderful. Classical music has that reputation of being “high-brow” and “serious,” and it’s great to see some humor with it!

There are some pieces which are funny. This seems to classified as 'light' classical but that's cool.

Vince used one too in his work. We actually had an old Remington for a long time.

@kobesbuddy If you were too fast on the manual ones, they used to jam.

@jstory07 I hope you were able to watch it. The guy has such a good time 'playing' his typewriter.

Well, that was interesting. I wouldn't have thought anyone would have been able to hear and old fashioned typewriter over the music.

@JudyEv Yes, and ringing the additional small bell to the side of the typewriter. I liked the way he shook out his "tired" hands. And the huge grin he was wearing.

I remember going past the commercial classroom and all the girls (no boys typing then) would be clacking away.

Always liked that one. Leroy also wrote The Syncopated Clock, Sleigh Ride and Bugler's Holiday.

Once I played the link, I recognised that and our band used to play the Bugler's Holiday too. They were all very 'listenable' pieces.

@JudyEv - I got rid of the big electric one 4 years ago, but I still have a small portable typewriter, that was the one tht my mother in law used to write her books.

We had one until a few years ago when it got 'decluttered'. We do get some wonderful skies here.

I remember this rendition very well; and I used to have an old manual typewriter just as you described. I think it was a Royal.
