Wednesday Night Musings

The laundry is done. Now I have to get the faucets back at that “magic point” of dripping so the pipes won’t freeze. All of the crawl space work was finished in a day. I’m now eleven thousand dollars poorer, so please contribute to my Go Fund Yourself account. Kidding, it’s a great thing that a lot of these companies will offer 12-24 months no-interest payment plans for work of this magnitude. And, if they’re gonna give me free money, I’m gonna take it!! What did I get for my 11K (no relation to a 401K)? The crawl space was cleaned out, disinfected (there was some mold down there), a barrier put down, a sump pump in case we have another one of those freak floods like in 2011, a rotted board replaced (ONE??? In a 72-year-old house? That’s pretty stinking amazing if you ask me!), and a dehumidifier. As I mentioned, this is an older house. Much like the house we lived in when I was born, there was (past tense) a big open grate in the “middle” of the house that blew the heat from the furnace under the house throughout the building. That was long replaced by the time I bought the house (it’s all central now), but the furnace is still in the crawl space. As a result, putting the dehumidifier down there and cleaning things up is a preventative measure in more ways than one!!! Today I had my semi-annual dermatologist appointment. He was his usual good humored self, cracking jokes as he pulled four moles off my body. He also cryogenically froze a few spots, prompting me to quip, “You know, you could just hang me out the window for a few seconds and save the cryo.” The Sport, Boat, RV, and Vacation Show opened today. Tomorrow is free admission for military. I haven’t decided if I’ll go or not. I’m certainly not in the mood for an RV: the just-concluded Tampa RV show (one of the biggest, if not the biggest, in the U.S.) had You Tubers talking about the low stock, long wait, and outrageously high prices. I have a 4” memory foam bed in my back seat for sleeping, so what do I need to spend $200,000 on? (Not even the house is costing me that much! ) Anyway, that’s the ramblings of the old hillbilly on this Wednesday night. Hope y’all have a good evening (or morning for those of you outside the U.S.)!! Here’s Elton singing about Wednesday night and other things:

Glad that they were able to complete the work on your crawl space. Now you'll have peace of mind that it is taken care of and a lighter wallet for a while If you decided to go to the Sport, Boat Rv and Vacation Show enjoy. .

I’ve opted against it. I figured that a show like that attracts a lot of — forgive me for stereotyping — “bubbas” who are there to look at fishin’ boats, and they might not be vaccinated.

I wish we had a crawl space. This concrete pad sucks. I would not spend that much on anything except property.

Thank you. I’ve lived here for 33 years, so I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth!

It seems queues are the new thing following covid. At least they are here. We'll be queueing for bread next!

Reading this post your retirement is starting to sound like a full-time job? With all that home repair you might consider moving into a log cabin. Just kidding... I have an old house too and like you, dripping Fawcett's are just one item of prevention on a list of many.

Sometimes it just is what it is. Things must be done, things must be maintained, things must be replaced, and sometimes that means parting with hard earned money. I just had to replace my stove $900, and had to install a gas line since I am done with electric for cooking, that was another $500. Easy come, easy go, right? lol

If you own a house you expect these things. I’ll probably be spending about that much next year for a new roof and siding. But it’s still cheaper than renting!!!!!

That seems kinda high. We had foundation work and waterproofing done for $20,000. Well, everything is expensive these days. As long as it does what is needed.
