My Daughter Wants to Buy a House

United States
January 27, 2022 4:08pm CST
My daughter is trying to buy a house. The house she likes went on the market 2 days ago. There are 35 showings scheduled and 7 offers already. Sheesh! It is definitely a seller's market these days! If you currently have a house you are thinking of selling, now is the time. It is definitely a seller's market. At least in the US. Got a house you want to sell?

@woldgirl569 My daughter is renting a 3 bedroom house with 2 roommates. She has been there for 5 years and would rather have something to show for her money. She has basically just thrown away that money for the past 5 years. She can stay where she is if this house doesn't work out.

@Kouponkaren I like the freedom of doing what I want. You are limited in that when you rent

@wolfgirl569 Yes that is true and part of her reason for wanting to buy a place of her own. She would love to buy the house she is currently living in and has lots of ideas for it. But it's not for sale, and if it was, I am pretty sure it would be out of her price range.

@Kouponkaren I can understand not wanting to rent. Good luck to her.

@CarolDM Yes, maybe not the best time to buy, but she is just throwing her money away by continuing to rent.

@Kouponkaren why would my husband grandparents do that? They already sold the one they use to live in across the road from us a year ago so that forced them to move 9 hours way back to one of there other house. They will not sell this one without talking to us first because that means we would have to find someone where which isn’t affordable at all for us. They are old but not mean like that. I know we don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things but one of them isn’t putting out there great grandkids that go to a school already.

@ShyBear88 Well, hopefully, the person that owns your house won't sell it out from underneath you?

@ShyBear88 Oh my, I didn't mean to upset you and I had no idea that your husband's grandparents own the house. I don't think they would do that to you. I didn't see anywhere that you mentioned that relatives own the house. I am sure they care about you and your children. You are in a good place if you can live in a place where relatives who care about you are involved.

I'm going to build a little house for myself.

@franxav That's great. How little will it be? Are you talking about a "tiny house" which is usually under 400 square feet?

@mildredtabitha Well I think there are going to be a lot of other people who want to buy the house too and it might just come down to who is willing to pay the most money for it. We shall see what happens.

@mildredtabitha Thanks, me too. She had to write a letter to the current owner telling her why she would love to live in that house. I got to help her with that and it was fun to do.

Price are through the roof. And yep, sellers are reaping rewards. Still, owning is better than renting, so I guess it is what it is.

@dodo19 Thanks. She really loves this house and it has a small little backyard area with a porch, which is hard to get in a city. So we are hoping she gets this one, but if not, she will just keep looking.

My son's street had a house that sold for more than $350,000.00 more than asking.

@marlina Wow, that's amazing. Our neighbors gt $60,000 more than asking for their house but $350,000 more is crazy! Good for the sellers though.

House prices have gone absolutely crazy in Australia too. In Sydney, the average mean price was going up over $1,000 a DAY! How is any buyer going to cope with that? Good luck to your daughter.

@Kouponkaren We did that and ended up with spare money so we could fit this house out as we wanted to.

@JudyEv Well, I guess some people still have money. The best thing to do if someone has a house to sell is to sell for a pretty penny, then downsize into a smaller home so you can still make a profit!

@Kouponkaren That is a nice thing about owning your own place you can stay as long as you want. When one rents if the contract is up and the landlord wants you out then you have to leave and hope that you found a place to go to.
• United States
28 Jan 22
@Hannihar Me too. But if this house doesn't work out, she can stay where she is until something else comes along. The thing is that most of the other houses for sale in that neighborhood all need a LOT of work.

I think I was successful in talking my son in to waiting a while and see if the market changes to be a little more in the favor of the buyer. Not a good time to buy a house right now.

@Kouponkaren Yeah, now they are in a real choice to make the rates are low but people asking a lot and if the rates go up, they will really be screwed.

@Bensen32 That's probably a good idea. My daughter talked to a mortgage guy and he says the mortgage rates will be going up within a few months so if she finds something she likes, now is a better time. She has been dreaming about buying a house for a while, but wasn't ready to take the leap until she heard that.

I have been considering selling ever since my 54k house was assessed at 279k. I bought in 1989 and it's paid off. I have watched my property tax triple over the years and I think that moving to a smaller home would be a good idea. But like you said, it's a seller's market and purchasing another home at an inflated price makes me hesitate. I have even considered some of those portable "little houses" to put on property.

@Vikingswest1 A tiny house is a really good idea if you can live that small. They are usually 400 square feet or less. If we were to sell our house, it would be listed for $100,000 more than what we paid for it. The key would definitely be to downsize so you could make a nice profit, even if the next house you buy is a bit inflated on price.
