An attractive display at a coffee-house

On the weekend, we went to Bunbury to the Summer International Film Festival. On the way, we stopped for a coffee at a place called The Crooked Carrot. It is in the middle of acres of vegetable gardens so the name is appropriate. We used to drive past this very regularly and for years, it was just a small concern. It doesn’t sell fuel and there is a service station a few kilometres further on. However, over the past several years, it has suddenly become really popular and there are always dozens of cars there. So we called in to see what all the fuss is about. There is a nice expanse of lawn and space for kids to run around it and it serves meals and snacks but I still don’t know why it has had the relatively sudden surge in popularity. I did like this display of succulents. The woodwork would be concocted from packing cases which are two a penny in the area. I thought this looked very cute. I might even be able to have something similar down one side of this house.

That is a very nice display and I love it! I have never had good luck with succulents though!

@JudyEv I agree. That is probably my problem with them.

I love the different containers - the little teapots, cups, etc. I think many of us water succulents too much.

It does look attractive but I wouldn't want to have to dust it, around here there is an abundance of dust which can drive a person nuts.

The dust around here permeates the indoors .... I wish I had known that before I bought all this, oh well, too late now.

As it's outside, I guess it gets pretty dusty before they bother about dusting it. An air-blower thing would be handy.

@rebelann Dust gets in whatever you do. It's not too bad here. There isn't a lot of bare earth around unfortunately. It's mostly paving and bitument/macadam. I guess you can't have everything.

When you say the packing cases are two a penny do you really mean that they are 2 for 1 cent? I love the succulents in the mugs and tea pots etc but not the regular planters.

@shaggin That's okay. It's to be expected if you're not familiar with the idioms. I was around when we still had pennies and shillings so it's a common expression to me.

Two a penny really just means that they are very cheap. In some places, you could probably pick them up for nothing. They are often on skip bins or rubbish heaps.

That is really cute, when we went to the Christmas Light Display in a big botanial garden center, we saw they had a garden cafe overlooking all the foilage. We thought once the weather warms it would be fun to have a bite in there. Friend and I are thinking about becoming friends of the center, so we can get free admission to the light show next year, and free garden admission the rest of the year.

@JudyEv Yeah, at this point I am planning on moving from the area in a few months, tentatively planning to meet with a realtor in March so chances of going there pretty often ma be minimal, I like Richmond very much so I will still probably try to get there once a monrh though. If I do that seeing the gardens could be on the list.

Sometimes it's really worth becoming 'friends' or 'members' or whatever. It depends how much use you think you'll get out of a place.

It is a very nice display, I guess parents like to be able to relax while having a meal and the kids can run around on the lawn,

@JudyEv hhhmm, then hard to figure the popularity. Maybe it's the only place to eat close for a lot of people out there.

The food was pretty basic. I just had a tub of mixed fresh fruit and Vince had a pie. But it was nice enough.

@JudyEv Ah, cups too - love it! I'd be scared to put drainage holes in something delicate as a teapot - with my luck I'd probably break them all . But yah, otherwise it'd get root rot - I hope they are in smaller pots.

I love the teapots and the cups. I don't know if they'd have to put drainage holes in them or if they'd just contain a smaller pot.

@much2say They no doubt have it sorted - or will get it sorted when the plants all start to die.

I wonder if it's this couple's/family's way of making extra money? Or possibly a semi-retired couple are doing it to keep busy just because? The display looks nice, though.

The plants aren't for sale or do you mean the whole place? I think they used to sell vegetables there but there were just some jams, pickles, etc, in the shop. They were doing a huge trade in meals with signs apologising for being under-staffed.

I'd forgotten about your winters. Here, against a brick wall, they might get cooked but with the wooden back they might be okay.

I believe that if such Succulents and other plants are on for sale in my vicinity, they would sell a lot. Such a place would be something that would be relished by elders and children alike! Nice share
