Last one for now!

I’ve been on a run of repairing and upcycling things, but this is the last one for now. Since plastic bags have fallen out of favour, plenty of organisations have been using cotton or canvas bags instead, thinking that they are more environmentally friendly (or at least make them look good!) Of course this is only the case if the bag is kept and re-used; if it is thrown away the impact is worse than throwing away a plastic bag as making a cotton bag uses far more energy, water, land etc. than plastic! But anyway the outcome is that we now have more bags kicking around. Not that I have bought any as I always take a bag with me, but sometimes people have used them to bring me things or something, and I have ended up with bags printed with all sorts of logos from steam railways to veterinary conferences, none of which really tempt me to carry them around. Finally I decided to do something with this one. I raided my stash of fabric scraps, cut out a few shapes, and stitched them on while watching a DVD with the girls. The result is that we are now fighting over who gets to take this bag! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

I mentioned to someone not long ago that the disposable plastic grocery bags were actually more environmentally friendly than the cotton reusable bags and they called me a liar. I gave them a link to a scientific video that gave facts and figures about it but they didn't bother watching it, just told me anyone could make a video so it doesn't prove anything. I had to laugh about it.

We reuse them here and never throw any away. The leftovers go to the flea market for them to use.

@Fleura That's interesting. I've never heard that before.

The man who invented the plastic bag did so out of concern for the number of trees that were being cut down to make paper bags. Apparently he always carried one in his pocket. It just never occurred to him that people would just throw them away!

You need to make them look less attractive.

@JudyEv From trying to find a use for a bag no-one wanted to use, I'll now have to look for more bags no-one wants!

Some of those reusable bags are made from recycled plastic pop bottles. I had a nice big red one that I kept some Christmas stuff in but when I went to take out the ceramic tree this past year, the durn bag fell apart, just disintegrated before my eyes.

@Fleura No, everything in the bag was fine, just the bag wasn't. And since you did the jazzing up on it, then you get to use it. If they want something similar, they can very well do it themselves, too.

@Fleura Plastic bags have been banned years ago here, I have some that I bought and use regularly, but this one is so pretty, I think to make one.

I can understand why your kids are fighting over that bag. It's awesome! I wouldn't mind using it too. That's a great idea for bags.

That is an awesome idea! Reusable bags don't tear like the plastic ones. They have gotten so thin you have to triple bag everything!
