Driving Myself (Crazy?)

If she don’t drive you crazy I guarantee you’ll be close enough to walk (Webb Wilder, “One Taste of the Bait”) What have I seen today? Rain. Lots of rain. But at least it isn’t freezing rain!!! It’s been slower than usual. Of course, the only thing I’m interested in is getting the heck away from that pink line on the weather radar that signifies freezing rain. Tonight I’m in Gulf Shores, Alabama, so I think I’ve made it. Can you believe I stopped at Buc-ee’s? Yes, it was a “must-see” for me! And what, you ask, is Buc-ee’s? It’s a chain of stores with fuel stations, mainly in Texas. There are a few of them outside of Texas (such as the one near Mobile, Alabama that I visited). They are famous for their snacks (known as “Beaver Nuggets,” and yes, you can have all the fun with that name that you want! ), astonishing restrooms (seriously, you could almost park a Smart Car in those stalls as big as they are!), and their buck-toothed mascot. I think he’s cute. As you can see by the picture, I had to indulged in a little Buc-ee’s beaver merchandise. (Surprisingly, neither the fuel nor the souvenirs were overpriced. In fact, I’ve seen those 20-ounce insulated cups at Meijer for about four dollars more than what I paid for mine!) There’s a threat of severe weather just west of here (and, if you’re familiar with the geographical location of Gulf Shores, you may know that “just west of here” is Mississippi, about five miles, then into Louisiana). If the weather is nice enough I’ll spend some time at the beach before heading into Flordia. At least I finally got to see a Buc-ee’s. The referenced Webb Wilder song:
